Pros/cons of a solid fairlead versus a roller fairlead, my current roller fairlead has some play in the upper roller and pinched/caught my cable when I used it. I'm using a Steel cable.

My understanding is solid fairleads (hawse fairleads?) are only suitable for plamsa (rope). Wire rope will rip them to shreads/vice versa.

Dogbreath, I think you may be thinking of alloy fairleads,

Saigo, for many years warn winches only came with cast iron fairleads and the roller was an optional extra.

My bad.

What's the advantage of a roller over a hawse fairlead then? I assume there's a great deal less resistance when pulling at angles, anything else?

I have a cast iron fairlead on my tube bar as it isn't dsigned for roller fairleads. Seems to work well.
