I was wondering if anyone knew if you can get a zook with hilux diffs engineered to be legally driven on the road? Also roughly what would it cost??

In NSW there is a few zooks getting around with lux diffs AFAIK. But Im not 100% sure if its legal or not as I saw it on 4wdtv

legal with the engineers certificate or without? I cant see it being legal in SA to swap diffs, also im talking about the SPOA conversion which i didnt mention.

Id like an idea on engineering costs if possible, or any reccomendations?

hey guys,

seeing as we're on this engineering topic already, i wont start a new thread. and sorry if this seems like hi-jacking.

there are a few of us up here in Darwin, N.T, and we're trying to get our sierra's registered. now the inspectors are telling us we cant have anything unless its engineered, and there are no engineers up here who deal specifically with the automotive scene.

we have had a couple of quotes between $1800 and $2800 for a suzuki sierra, WT, with:

SPOA
drop pitman arm
extended brake lines
drive shaft spacers (13mm)
15"x8" steel wheels (3" BS)
31" MT/Rs
2" BL

is this BS or what? so, if people are willing, could they please reply with what they have done, and whats engineered, and whats not, or couldn't get engineered, and an approx. price range for engineering of the mods done.

if i should start another thread, please let me know, i just thought if its about engineerabilty etc etc, maybe it should just be one thread.

please, can you guys help us out? we've been driving around for the past 3 or so years with these mods, and all of a sudden, they say no? what gives? and how can they do this? there is nothing in writing about anything, so we cant look it all up.

i heard somewhere that some people can engineer a spoa zook wt on 31"s with 2" BL for about $500 or so, true or false.

thanks again.

From memory SPOA in SA is a big no no. I would suggest calling Regency Park and talking to the RTA inspectors themselves. If you talk to the guys in policy you may get a different answer to those that do the inspection after your independant engineer has signed it off.

Engineering questionns are constantly asked on here so have a good search around. But what it should come down to is get in touch with YOUR local authourities. Legalities can vary massively from state to state, vehicle to vehicle and mod to mod. Even different engineers seem to approve different things. Do not rely on info from a forum to base your vehicles legality.

Just because so and so got such and such engineered doesn't mean you will because they may also have done other things that they didn't mention.

Also if you base your ideas on forum heresay without discussing with your engineer before you start anything you may end up with a lot of time and $$ wasted when you try and get it registered. It always pay to havve your plans worked out before you start doing anything or spending any $$. Then sit down with these ideas with an approved engineer and see what you can do. He may say yep go for it or no but if you do this we can or if you change that bit for this bit etc.

Take your time and speak to the people who can give the final word rather than a public forum where there are alot who will just say go for it and forget about the legalities until you are caught.

Good luck

So ive rung Transport SA and the guy said that with an engineers certificate to cover the mods it should be ok to register. But he told me that any car with tyres 15mm larger in diameter from what the tyre placard says cant be registered, so if i got it engineered id have to drive it in with SPOA and hilux diffs with tiny pizza cutter tyres lol!!

that actually sounds pretty good. You are getting a very select professional to ensure that the vehicle he is assessing and approving is going to be safe. Do you really want to entrust that to someone who charges $200. Sometimes you have to pay to get quality.

Why do you think you need to go to the extreme of getting hgilux diffs under it anyway. There are quite a few of us that are running 34" tyres, lockers low gearing and still using Sierra diffs. granted we are driiving i Victorian conditions which allow a bit less diff and big tyres because the traction generated is usually in mud.

The Sydney guys who drive on high traction surfaces like rock tend to need the upgrade in strength.

I'd recommend buy your Zuk and go to a say 31" tyre and see how you go. You will be surprise at how capable a Zuk on 31s with lockers and gearing can be. All without the need for expensive engineering.

cheers for your advice, the only reason i was talkin hilux diffs is cause i have seen a few im looking to buy with them, not to put them in myself. I definately want the SPOA conversion and you need the engineers certificate for that.

Really we all know its going to be safe cause people have been doing the conversions for ages! theyre all the same so if i could get the piece of paper that lets me be legal for $200 that would be awesome! If it was already registered in SA i wouldnt even bother, it wont be on road very much. Plus the car i dive now is very illegal, a car with any modification is deemed illegal from road transport
