F55 history question

OK, here's a question for those who really know their daihats!

I have a F55, and the chassis appears to be a F50 frame lengthened, (cut and shut) with a peice of 100x50 RHS welded in.
The PO claims that this is how the first ones were made, and, it being a very neat job, I wonder if he's right :?

Any ideas?
