I have just bought a 99 Gu Td42T and have herd that the standard turbo is quite sad in the performance stakes.
What can i do with the stock turbo set up to make it preform better without majorly becoming a fuel muncher.

Any advise would be great, i am very new to desiel four wheel drives.

Cheers Grant.

performance and fuel efficient do not go together ...
if u can afford to buy a patrol u can afford the fuel ...

crank the boost up to 12psi ... crank the fuel up to suit ...
buy urself a boost controller, EGT and Boost guage
also add a small fuel pump in some where ...
and get urself a full 3" exaust system no muffler

more fuel = more performance = higher EGTs
high EGTs = bad for motor

keep it at 550c post turbo

and use the search button ...

Buy yourself a bigger turbo and manifold and then sell the standard stuff to me. I'll look after you. :D

same as HOONZ said.

3" exhaust no mufflers

fit a pyro to monitor temps.

then boost upto 14psi fuel to suit should have about 96+ ish KW at rear wheels.

All up no more than $1000

If you want more than this expect to pay alot more dollars.

As the only way to get more power would be to tweak the pump more fuel through it then bigger turbo which means different manifold and then you need custom air box and 4 snorkle. You can go down this path if you have about a spare 5k.

my 2 cents worth

Same as Hoonz said. It wouldn't hurt to get an intercooler. I wound my boost up to 15psi and had the truck tuned on the dyno. I had 116kw at the rear wheels with 33's on. On my way down to OBC I was getting better fuel economy than my navi in his standard GU. ;)

It depends on how much do you want to spend.

As mentioned a 3" exhaust and new dump pipe will make a difference followed by a tune and anaroid adjustment.

If you want to spend more money you can have the CHRA (turbo bearing housing) replaced with a roller bearing unit, much better responce. JPC retain the original housings and have them machined to suit.

I would suggest you contact Mark at JPC and he will give you all the options and prices to suit. He has tuned my 100 and GU and always done a great job at a reasonable price.

Cheers

Most of the turbo mobs do an upgrade for about $2k. That plus the other stuff mentioned above and it should go great :D :D

When I looked around at turbo upgrades most of them improved top end power but did little for bottom end. Depending on the use would determine which would be better but for bush work bottom end would be the way to go.

LPG fumigation, 95% burn rate, 20Kw more 20% torque improvment, higher KM service intervals up to 20k between service, more fuel efficient

This is largely because top end powered is more readily improved with using a larger compressor wheel and machining the existing compressor cover to suit. Bottom end performance (and responsiveness) is governed by the exhaust side (turbine) and ultimately the A/R of the exhaust side. But needs replacement of exhaust housing to make it work, and therefore increased cost.

We're going through this at the moment, and are changing the exhaust side to a larger housing, but actually has a smaller A/R than the turbo we started with. Should be more responsive, but will sacrifice some top end performance to achieve it.

Spoke with Mark from JPC yesterday, Nice bloke easy to talk to.
Has given me a couple of options buy changing turbo to roller bearing ,intercooling and the required changes to the fuel.
All sounds very good, but it does require Big bucks$$$$$$.
He is sending me some package prices and other options.

sadly power always costs big $.. what prices was he suggesting for the turbo/intercooler mods?

Off the top without discounting for the whole deal , it was about $2700 for all the turbo installed running and dynoed.and about $2000-$2500 for intercooling.
but it would be better if i did everything together.
