"HOW TO " Disco transfer case

Can someone please explain how to use the transfer case in a v8 manual disco???

What is the diff lock??? Is it similar to arb locker type things??

Sorry...absolute LR beginner:)

Did you get a manual with the car?

move to the left is centre diff lock - dont use on sealed roads but use it all the time offroad. To the right is unlock- sometimes you need to pop reverse to unlock it or vary the revs.

The transfer case has low neutral and high in that order which gives you a different gearbox ratio for all forward gears and reverse. Move this at about 5kph. It works the same in left or right position ie whether the centre diff is locked or not.

That should help but you should find a manual or better still do a beginner 4x4 course somewhere- clubs might help.

The transfer case is in a H pattern. The left hand side of the H is CDL, while the right side is open.

Push the Lever (parrallel to the bonnet) to the Left, you will then be in High range CDL, to go into low range, push the lever forward. You can also go into low range without difflock, by keeping the lever on the right side and push forward.

I aint no 4x4 newby... heh heh it just confused me a little....So basically when you drive on the blacktop its driving in 4high....

So what is this difflock thing???

is the disco a series 2 ? these didnt have a manually opperated center difflock.

All disco's are all wheel drive, so if one wheel starts to slip all the power will go to that wheel, which is used for on road work (like a subaru i think). In difflock, the power is divided 50/50 between front and rear axle, for off-road work.

The lever should be on the back right of the H pattern for driving on the blacktop.

I was somewhat confused too when I saw the disco's transfer case system, looking at in now is really good, cause you could still pull a boat off water on bittuman in Low range without locking the center diff, so your less likely to break something when you turn.

some D2's have factory H pattern setup 03 onwards i think most have a CDL just not the leaver to operate it

H pattern is not strictly correct.

When the lever is all the way to the right, the centre diff will unlock. When it is all the way to the left the centre diff should lock (the lever does not positively lock the diff - this relies on a spring). A lamp in the instrument cluster illuminates when the centre diff is locked.

The lever can be moved left to right (or right to left), no matter what the forward/backward position of the lever is. There is no H pattern gate or any other mechanism to prevent this.

As others have said, don't lock the centre difflock on high traction surfaces (bitumen or gravel roads). But do lock it on low traction surfaces (when you need 4wd), or you wil be no better than 2 wheel drive and spinning the rear (or front) wheels with the diff unlocked can lead to failure of the centre diff.
