blocking EGR valve/pipe on TD5's

have read in pommy mags and have a mate that has done it (fabbed up a little plate to block off)...block off the EGR, exhaust gase recycling valve, to promote better performance and economy.
my friend states that he blows less smoke and has made noticable difference in power and economy, as is burning 'cleaner air'?
it was originally done in uk for polution reasons i think?
in mags it states for 'off road use only', is this due to different emission levels?
has anyone done this?
does it have any long term issues? much different power/economy figures?
thinking of doing it to my old mans disco and defender...got make sure its all safe before i do it though....

I always thought EGR was a good thing. But only know about its use on petrol not oil burners. With petrol the exhaust gas contains a certain amount of nitrus oxide which improves the combustion properties and helps retard any pinking.

AFAIK The EGR system on oz Td5's is non operational.
The system is still in place, but when you go in to engine management screens on nearly new vehicles even, the codes for 'EGR valve stuck open' and 'EGR valve solenoid not operational' come up.
The UK, US and other countries have different fuel maps and options etc and some are supported in the ECU's we get and some aren't.

I wonder if any one in oz has been charged by a dealer for changing a faultly EGR valve ?

Hi There,
as for the EGR valve on the TD5. Here in Europe many people take this valve of there system. I was one of the first ho did this. Why ,my tuner JE engineering said that's one of the first things you wanna take of your car. It recycles the hot air back into the chamber for reburning. It's not a good solution but for the emmisions controls it was placed there.
When my ECU was on there computer i can't remember anything that they had to reset things inside the ECU at al. It a very simple operation. But when i have to go back for MOT then it could be that i have to put it back on. But then i also have to put in another ECU with less horse power and then it wil pas MOT. So you can do that very easy your self. But i can't say that on the standard car it wil bring more horse power. I had it tuned at the same time and that was a big difference. But never have driven a TD5 with a standard tuning and without EGR valve.

Hi,
I can take some photo's but i can explain as wel. You take of the complete EGR valve including the EGR tube what is going arround the cilinderhead to the exhaust manifold. Where the EGR tube was connected to the manifold you using a small plate to block it. Where the complete EGR was fitted you make a small tube what has the same diameter as the rubber hose from the inter cooler. Once that part is made connect it with the spot where the EGR valve was placed,connect the intercooler hose and you are ready. It a very simple operation.
Many 4x4 shops over here selling these parts you are needing. One of them i would say to go for is Devon 4x4 in the UK.

cheers for that info...my friends disco does have a 3"exhaust and ecu upgrade, he simply made a little plate to block off the valve and that was it, i'll get some pics this weekend.

Can anyone confirm this as I have had issues with my EGR which has been replaced - made a huge difference to the drive and there is no way my mechanic would screw me over like that.

Hey Mick
Not 100% sure on this, hence the AFAIK preceeding the comment. All I can say is that most of the systems I've seen have had inoperational EGR and/ or fault codes come up on the Rovacom . Even very late models with low K's. Can't comment on your situation though, because if the EGR gets stuck open for real, ( Not just a code in the computer telling you it is...) Then the performance will be no good and there will be LOTS of smoke.

The EGR is operation on Aussie TD5's.
Don't bother pulling it all out, its a PITA and makes it difficult if the greenslip man notices. On the EGR block just pull the plug out and that will make it non operational - sometimes this happens when driving down bumpy roads anyway.
I would never admit to doing it as its against the rules, but lets just say I have seen it done in both Discos and Defenders, and it makes an improvement to partial throttle performance and lowish rev performance. The gen1 type TD5's have 1 EGR plug that needs to be pulled, and the gen2 type TD5's have 2 plugs to pull.
Long term issues? You dont get crap in your engine from recirculating exhaust through the inlet so as I understand it any long term differences are beneficial.

Interseting....what am I looking for then under my bonnet....any chance of a pic, might give it a try now and see what happens - mine is a '99 TD5.

That looks like the plug I was thinking about but until someone can confirm that's the plug, i'm leaving it in........tried to take it out anyway and it's pretty tight, is there a trick to getting it out?

The plug is black and it has a blue and a brown wire that leads to it.
On both the Disco and Defender it is on the Drivers side. The Disco has the module under the brake booster area, and the Defender inide the wing about 1/2 way forward and at the top. The Defenders that I "looked" at had 2 plugs on each and they both had fallen off. The 2000 Disco had one that had also fallen off.

www.scorpionracing.co.uk (if you want to spend the money) and they sell and EGR removal kit. Click on products, then performance, and then general. Theres a picture of the kit. Rovacraft pty ltd (08) 9377 0080 in W.A. is their Australian dealer.........

got the plug off (what a pita) will take it for a drive later...
one thing I did notice that there was oil in the plug when I took it off, is this normal?

Short of ripping mine off, what is the technique and have you driven it yet....any difference?

nah i boxed in at work now so wont get a chance till the end of the day :(
i used a screw driver to press the metal clip in as far as i could (come in from the bottom) and with my left hand wiggle the plug off. wasnt easy but it came loose.... let me know if you have oil in yr plug too pls

Alright, got the plugg off, before I drive though, just confirming it is the square plug with the metal clip on the right hand side of the drawing above and not the 2 plugs at the top of the unit?
For your info Mick, zero trace of oil in my plug - dry as a nuns..........!

its the plug that has number 1 next to it in the pic above (the only electrical plug there) i started mine and gave it a rev it seemed ok
