Ranchos too hard on a zook?

Has anyone put RS9012s on their zook?
I have read on here that some models of Ranchos made originally for larger trucks are too heavily valved for the light weight of the zook. I don't want to spend shedloads of cash on these things and have it ride like shite.
Can anyone help me out???

I just bought some 9012's recently. They are not on the car as yet though (they are still under my desk at work acutally)...
However, I know that LJ Extreme (Mick) has got them on his lwb LJ and they work a super treat - he's running them at 1 offroad and they have to be run at 3 or 4 onroad otherwise they are just way too soft for him.
I'm hoping that my 9012's are going to work that well too - i have 2 of the 9012's and 2 or the 9012x's so I'll keep you posted after they go on if you are prepared to wait for a while (i.e. at least a few weeks).

I have the 9012s in the rear of mine for the last 4 years or so. I ususually run them at 1 offroad and about 3 on when i can be bothered to play with the dial. Not sure what they were originally designed for i think for a dual setup on a Ford truck

Don't forget that if you find they are too hard to can always "lay them over" more to reduce their dampening ability even more - that's assuming that you are making custom mounts for them - which considering that you are about to mount a shock that is somewhat longer than the stock one - i'm thinking is a pretty safe bet

Damo there on the back of my vitara thats how I bought it there not too bad on road on 1 and I don't touch them unless Im going in some serious sh1t.

gold plate them and install some complimentary neons, that should do it.

actually damo - i saw some shock mounts last night that would suite your car - they were on the counter next to the perfume and earings at David Jones...

actually damo - i saw some shock mounts last night that would suite your car - they were on the counter next to the perfume and earings at David Jones...
Perfume section??? No wonder I cant find decent shock towers! I wonder if they stock rockhoppers in the lingerie section. Greg?

Not sure mate - thankfully your mum was happy with the purfume and earings so there was no need to go into the lingerie section.

I know - sorry Damo - i feel terrible for stooping to such a low level...
I think Grimbo is to blame for this one.
I'm back into tech mode now.
Damo - fill us in on how you are going to install the ranchos mate. It looks like my 9012's are going to have to come up through the rear of the tub and then attach to a cross bar in the roll cage that runs between the 'C' pillars.
This means they'll be slanted backwards a bit to avoid the fuel tank.

yes 9012's are for a big car, but they are for a twin shock application, so they only need half the valving.
So as a single shock, there about as soft as it gets!!

Well, mine now has the back cut off and a tray in place so things are a little easier (see pic attached). The tray only sits about 50mm below the surface that the targa bar would sit so it's pretty high. I have done a few measurements and it looks to me as though the 9012s will fit no worries. I will have the fuel tank in that space too and after looking at it this week I will have to change the mounts so it sits around 90 degrees (think along the axis of the centreline of the chassis) to give the shocks enough room. I'll have a shock hoop which will go from one chassis rail up & over the fuel tank to the other chassis rail. The shocks will mount to that.
With any luck i'll be doing this next week. I'll take pics

I have RS9000's on the Jimny (4" lift) but we fitted the - now lets see if I can get this right - hymtherical bearings (aka rose-joints or johnny-joints- thanks Simon at 4Way Suspensions for all your help)
and all is good. Sits quite comfy at 3 on road and 1 offroad......works kinda well

The way i'm setting mine up I can't see the standard bushes binding at all though.

Hey Squik,
Can you give us the low down on these rose joints please? What are their dimensions (i can't really tell if that ring on the rancho is standard size or not)? Do you know what angles it flexes to? i.e. 30 degrees?
Oh, and like Damo asked, what are they worth?

Not sure of price as Greg organised them for me...but speak to Simon at 4Way Suspension in Blacktown NSW.
The bottom ring is not standard.....its custom made by 4way and added to the shock.
They work really well, when you see the angle they sit at when youre in full stretch you'll be shocked at just how much pressure a stock end will put on your mounts......gives you just that little bit more articulation too
....dunno, I suppose they kinda work little pinable shackles....
I love 'em!!!!!!
As for degrees of movement....hey...Im just a girl....you'll have to ask Simon!

I have the Rancho 5000 shocks on the rear of my truck cantilevered in at the top.
they have 3 settings, and I have them set on 3 the hardest.
I used to leave them on 1 the softest but I was getting body sway around curves at speed.
3 is OK cantilevered though. On and off road.
Just a pain to adjust the settings.
9000's for the front I think .

I'll hazard a guess and say he probably means they are angled over from vertical to more of a 30-45? angle. Or I'm completly wrong

You got it grimbo,
I moved the rear top mounts inboard till they were 100 mm apart and fitted 32" rancho 5000 series shockers. They miss hitting anything and work pretty good, you need the long shocks if you intend modding the wheel travel. I had intended doing the 3/4 eliptical.
Sorry no digicam as I spend all my dosh on my truck. It's a compulsion.
My next stage is to raise the front towers. I have already raised them 2 metric inches, but want to push them up another 2 or 3 MI's, and maybe closer to the inner guard to stop the tyre rub on the shocks. Perhaps I should extend through the guard ? Nah, don't need that much travel, it could get scary. But I want to fit longer eye type shocks instead of the pin type.
