is it a tough job requiring a press? or just hand tools? My GU makes a clunk cum creek when going from backwards to frontwards ( out of a parking spot f'instance) Coming up to 100k so I thought I may change the rear shaft ones just for peace of mind. What sort of price would I expect to pay for the bits. Any sensible comments?

firstly are you sure it is the uni's as i get the same similar noise in my mq and have been told it is just the back lash and sudden change but a uni will cost about $30 and you can do them yourself quite easily though i dont know how to with the double cardinal joint but the single ones a hammer and a steel bar and a work space

I bought 1 at repco in fyshwick ( ACT) fo rmy jag and it was 1 mm too long. I couldnt get the snap rings in. And they wondered why i wasnt real happy ( i lived an hour away) when i launched over the counter. I only go to bearing places for stuf like that now. Usually always in stock and a lot cheaper and better quality.
Cheers

I own a 2.8 td intercooled and replaced ALL uni's recently.
The good ( ????) folks at Nissan wanted in excess of $500 just to supply me with the unis.
Repco wanted half that and they claimed I'd need different unis for the back. (BULL)
My bearing supplier who has supplied me with bearings for more years then I wish to recall, (CBC ) supplied me with FOUR(all indentical) unis at the ripe old price of $37 EACH.
They appeared to look every bit just as the Nissan ones did, except without the Nissan label on the box.
I questioned the quality, and the rep sez, their reputation rides on their products, they supply all heavy industry/road transport/farming/earth moving and wouldn't stand a chance if they sold inferior products.
The went in no trouble at all, in fact the old ones were a barstard to get off, had rusted on and took ages to free.
Don't think it's neccessary to balance the shafts after replacement, (depends on how much you bang about the shaft in removal of unis)there's no vibration or any suss noises and I'm very happy with the result.
