What sort of hassle would it be to bung on my 2.8 GQ? Would the gains be worth the effort? What sort of $$ are you after?
not sure what they are worth but its i'm pretty sure its complete with all the hoses and brackets $250

I agree they are starting to look more and more like good donor vehicles. Give it another two years and there will be plenty under $10k.
What are the diff ratios in the 2.8 GUs?

its just the 2.8 GU has the car gearbox if I remembr.
so would be engine and box swap.. Not much more of an issue really

correct would need to swap both and the transfer case.
And to fit a 4.2 into engine bay you have to relocate one of the engine mounts as well.

if Im going to this effort, it will either the Chev 6.5 or something similar. shame the 5.9/6.0 Cummins dont fit out of the Dodge RAM.. that with the Alison auto would give me a woody for a year.

I suppose the top mount would mean chopping the bonnet, which wouldn't be too much hassle I suppose...............and it might look quite OK too. Hmmm. Is there anything else that might be a problem?
I'm assuming the GQ and GU 2.8s are the same, bar the IC set up.
Am I right?
It shouldnt much different am selling the cooler on behalf of a mate... but I think you will need to cut the bonnet and put a scope which will be good anyway. Piping should be similiar not sure what else someone else may wish to comment on this.

Check the few 7in lifted GQs on Ebay and their prices.
As you say, prices are dropping like a brides nighty.. good if ya buyin'!!
and with word on the news of fuel about to shit itself again at the bowser it may get better yet for buyin!

Hi if the sale of the intercooler to barnsey falls through I’d be interested, what motor was in the gu it came off and does it come with the mounting rails?

To pick up a donor for $15k or > + the cost of the engine swap, you could end up with a good car for $25-30k, depending on how much work you wanted/could do yourself.
Its got to be a good option for some.

If anyone does this with a 4.5 petrol GU and needs to get rid of the petrol engine, keep me in mind!!

I reckon that you would have NO problem sellin a 4.5 or 4.8 for good $, its just waht bits you need to keep on the 4.8 to use that auto with the other motor could be a PITA

If it was me, I'd be using whatever trans came with the donor engine you were putting in the car. Sell the nissan auto with the engine, the computer stuff would be a nightmare (cost $$).

I dont reckon you could sell the 4.5 or the 4.8 for nearly the amount your hoping to get.
2 Years ago my mate picked up 4.5 crate motor with everything for $4300 from nissan brand new there is influx of these motors and now u can 4.8 motors just as cheap as there are so many of them. So if you had something with alot of kms on it aint worths hit.
Krimnl tried selling a 4.5 motor on here fairly lowish kms had a few accessories on it and it took a while to sell at $1000.

Man I hope that's still the case when I'm ready to buy!! I emailed a few wreckers and got quoted $3800-4000 for the 4.5, including 'puter etc. for the conversion. For a 4.8, which I wouldn't think would be that thick on the ground considering the percentage fo 4.8's compared with ZD30 and even TD42T's, I got quoted $6600.
But then again, wreckers are rip off merchants!!
Very interesting Morkz, from someone inside the industry. Ta for that. Maybe I could afford to get a 4.8

My theory here is that, just as far as working out your finances/budget, you should count on getting zero for any leftover bits from the car you're building up. Anything you get is a bonus. It's just my experience that you either get less than you expect or take longer to sell than you expect or some other problem crops up. So, avoid the stress of a blown budget later and plan for the worse scenario from the start.
Besides, top dollars on the 4.8 would come if you sold every accessory, but you might be wanting to mix 'n' match air con compressors, alternators, etc between the original motor and the replacement.

while i believe you, a mate when he drowned his 4.5 and bent a rod out the block he was charged well $8k for a new crate donk from missan.. I still think you could grab 4k easily for a 4.5 and more for a 4.8 without trying.

or the 4.5 petrol.
i have hear about big problems with the 2.8 and then again i have heard that they are great.
the only bad thing i have heard about the 4.5 so far is that they drink like a fish...
just wondering what people would rather buy?
both cars exactly the same condition and trim etc.. just different engines

overall. a bit of touring, a bit of rock crawling, towing a trailer (not big van or anything) keeping for 5 years or so.
