80/lux front diff

I see a lot of people saying 80's front diffs are the same as lux front diffs.
What part is the same? Physically they are much bigger and bulkier and have a 4.1:1 ratio. How are they the same?

The centres inter change with one another... And yes the ratios are different..

I think the 80 front diff is the same as a hilux rear, ie 8 inch diameter crown wheel but different ratios.

What would be the point of interchanging them if they have different ratios?

Do you think an air locker from the rear of a lux would fit the front of the 80 then?

yes but needs adapter sleeves made up to adapt bearings as the 80's run bigger carrier bearings, unless of course your hilux rear was lsd centre originally which are the same bearing size.

The 80 centre is high pinion, Hilux centre is low pinion. CVs and swivels are much bigger. After 1992 brake rotors and calipers are bigger too. Different steering mechanism, arms mount under swivels on 80 with tie rod behind diff, arms mount over swivels with tie rod in front for Hilux. Of course the entire diff is wider

80 series and Hilux are both 8" diffs.
80 is high pinion, Hilux is low pinion.
80 can go into hilux.
Hilux cannot go into 80 as steering wont fit under the rear of centre.
80 diff is stronger by design as you are running on the correct side of the teeth when going fowards, where as a hilux front diff is esentially a rear centre thown in front and is running on the coast side of the teeth.
80 series diffs tend to break when used hard in reverse.
Standard ratio is 4.1
Some bunderras came with 4.88
Aftermarket CW and P are available to change ratios right up 5.29.

And yes front ARB airlocker is same part no as Hilux RD23.

Will a hiux crown wheel and pinion fit into a 80 series centre? i.e. replace 80s CW&P with the hilux ones

No, gears are reverse cut. Teeth will be at 90 degrees to each other.
High pinion diffs are built similar to the V6 and Turbo diesel Hilux diffs. 4 Cylinder lux diffs are much smaller internally (gears, bearings)

Yes, RD23 is dis-continued.
