USA chap seeks toy advice

Hey all!

I am a Land Rover geek but recently bought a toyota truck to run parts at my shop. I had some questions, hoped you all would see fit to share some information about. Thanks in advance.

I bought a 81' Toyota mini truck with 2.2l diesel and five speed transmission. It has low compression in number 4 cylinder. Needs repaired or replaced. You all prolly know diesel toys are hard to come by over here. So here is my question.

A guy up in Canada has a 2LT for sale with a bad cylinder head. And no turbo on it. Can I reuse my cylinder head? Can I reuse my injectiton pump? It seems to have the boost compesator in the tophat of the injection pump. If I get the turbo exhaust manifold also can I use a T4 garret turbocharger straight bolt on or will an adaption be necessary?

Any other thoughts or comments appreciated. I have been searching around about this but would like some more educated response.

Cheers
JP

I can't help you directly, but....

there are some real Hilux gurus on the toyota forum at http://www.offroadexpress.co.nz/

I'm sure you'd get some more good advice if you posted there as well

Why noy just repair your engine? You have an L engine, but I think a 2l-t head will fit,

Yes you can use all your parts, but bare in mind the fuelling on the pump is set to a smaller engine. Some adjustment will be necessary. Garret turbos wont bolt up straight, toyota use unique flanges for the turbos, if you can find a ct20 it will fit up.

Hope this helps

Thanks Andy,

Of course the fueling would have to be adjusted to suit. Glad to hear the other parts will interchange. I hear the pistons in the 1l are not suited to turbocharging so that is why I located a 2lt donor. Bad news on the turbo. Anyone make a straight forward adapter for a garret?

Thanks again
