AFAIK, second airs aren't road legal either because of the necessary mods to the rims.

what mods to the rim? all it need is a 2nd hole?

How are secondairs legal? You need to modify the rim by drilling a hole for the extra valve, thereofre unless you have approval to do so they are illegal.
They're just not as noticable as external beadlocks.
If you had an accodent with second airs that involved the deflation of a tyre and an investigation were to take place i think the results could be interesting.

i've seen plenty of mud get in the bead when secondairs are on, leaving an annoying leak

I agree with James and Dave. If the rim has been modified (hole cut) then it becomes illegal unless it has been done by a qualified person. I too have seen plenty of crud in beads with second airs, but I suppose there are a lot of variables, ie pressures, terrain etc. Externals are definately the go, but as previously mentioned, they are in view of everyone, including Mr Plod!

If they have a NATA approved Lab do a test on the rims to prove that they still meet the relevant standards then yes, they are legal, if not they are illegal.

sounds like a bit of BS to me... i can't see how a 5mm hole or 2 in a rim can make it illegal.

I'm with you on this one.
I've seen rims made with 2 holes in them.
Gravel and crap can still get in the bead but it's just a matter of breaking the bead and blowing it out then reseating the tyre.
45-50psi helps in the secondairs.

I have heard of a few blowing the second airs. I have seen this with my own eyes once and they were fitted by procomp.
I have externals and wouldn`t run the internal even if they were given to me.

Thats all well and good to say that a 5mm hole doesn't make a difference. However Mr Plod will simply say prove that the 5mm hole didn't make a difference. The only way this can be done is to provide a test report stating such.

They both have advantages and disadvantages. But in my opinion, to answer your question, they need to be treated with respect between trips, as mud, at lower tyre pressures, can enter the bead and cause a slow leak. We all clean out mud from our radiators, alternators, ect and I think internal beadlocks require the same treatment.
Oh and does it really matter what rims your (generally speaking) illegal off road tyres are fitted to?????

Obviously your tyres are going to be illegal if they're too big, does the tyre manufacturer state that they're legal on your car, no. Do they state second airs are legal, yes they do.
Personally i have externals and have never had a problem, those i know with second airs have had some issues with the tubes leaking then the tyre tearing the second air open.

Most of us can only go 1 inch taller and wider unles we get an engineers certificate, then those that do, don't get it done with their off road tyres, making most of the tyres we choose for our off road pursuits unroadworthy/illegal.
I run q78 Swampers and mechanical beadlocks and don't know (or care) which is more unroadworthy/illegal.
Like I said, internal beadlocks require maintenance between trips to clean out the mud which is probably the cause of them leaking then causing the damage.

I think you'll find that second air's are legal, it is only illegal to circumfrence weld rims. which is why ext beadlocks, widining of rims, and offset changes to standerd offest rims are illegal. thats the price we pay for being hardcore offroaders.
but what would i know right.

I wouldn't run Second Airs again, i had trouble with the sides having shiat stuck between the rim and the bead

. Not good for speed events as when cornering they allow debris to get wedged in there.
Externals look heaps more sexc

I have SecondAirs and yep a couple times I have got stuff in the bead. My main prob has been due to my 15x7s not having a nice flat area for the second valve to tighten down on to - due to the rim offset etc my second air valves just sit where the rim curves inwards and if you wiggle the valve by hand sometimes you can make them leak.
Dried mud seems to seal them well. Need to clean them up and add a dab of gastket goo etc on the rubber o-ring seals.
