You will have to tell us what diesel motor it is and what model it is first

some read from the injector pump & some read from the flywheel. I am not sure where else. these are the 2 places that I have experianced. The problem sounds more like a wiring problem or the tacho itself to me.

it seems to me like a bad connection somewhere

I had the same problem on my 2L Diesel.
The sensor on the back of the fuel pump (between fuel pump and engine block, hardest thing to get to ever!) was stuffed. It slowly stopped working until I had no tacho.
I replaced it with a 2nd hand sensor that I was lucky to score from a Diesel Mechanic for cheap and all was fine again. If it is that sensor then they are hard to find as most want to sell them with the pump 2nd hand.
I have never priced a new one.
Not sure if the 2.8 has the same sensor though???

Not sure if any Toyotas do, but another place for diesels is off the alternator.

havnt had a good chance to look at it but i know from memory that there are 3 wires from the injector pump and two are the fuel shut off thingy, so maybe the third wire goes to the tacho...will look this arv
