Very true - there are some very specific spares depending on what you have..
Also carry some gasket silicon, tie wire, gaffer tape, quick steel epoxy putty, fuel line hose, hose clamps, electrical wire, crimp connectors. A small mutlitmeter doesnt go astray.
If its a diesel,, not much else.
If its a carbed V8 - carry diaphragm rubbers for the carbs, points, spare ignition module if elctronic injection. Spare electric fuel pump if you're a fair way from help. This is what I carry to make me feel better - I've had to use most of the above at one time or another. The list can be endless depending on how secure you want to feel.

Also diff oil, motor oil and some Power steer fluid.
A spare CV / Stub axle if you have them
Syringe to get oil back into the housing helps.
Fuel Filters

Or just do what I do. Make sure your mates have a good 4WD so they can tow you home.

Spare tailshafts, front & rear (rear used more often!), 2 CV's, front inner axles, front stub axles, front cut off stub axles (to get home in 2wd), spare drag link & track rod, tie rod ends, uni joints, wheel bearings.
Hmm... might as well take a tandem and another Disco each trip!

THis is a cool idea, saw it the other week.
Also tie rod splitter to get the ends out more easily

Syd King from Qld Rollers and Liners in Brisbane made some polyurethane replacement drive flanges a while back (without the axle hole/spline of course). If you break an axle you just remove the broken bits, bolt on a poly drive flange (seals perfectly nomatter what), then drive home in 2wd. They didn't cost much and he may still make them or have them lying around. He made them in 5 and 6 stud patterns.
I carry:
oil
water
brake fluid
pas fluid in the 110
tyre levers
tyre tube
tubeless patch kit
rad hoses
fan belt
assorted bolts (including one of each critical suspension bolt/nut)
fuel hose
silicone/sikaflex
duct tape
electrical tape
electrical wire
fuses
fencing wire
fitting to seal off/isolate brake system in case of a broken brake pipe (made in the bush out of necessity)
