just a quick one, and yes i searched i came up with nothing that im really after.
im just wondering if you can safely.accurately stretch coils coils to give lift? im only wanting about an extra inch or so, can you do this? iv got acces to several spring makers trhough work, but seeign as theyre closed right now and i wont be in for a few days i was just thinking about this...
There is no reason why you can't. However doing it properly so it doesn't sag back to original height is hard. Ideally, the springs should be heated, stretched while hot and then re-tempered at their new height.
What about cutting down the GQ springs (using an angle grinder, not oxy) that you have to approximately 1" higher than your current lift? Not sure it's possible to stretch spring steel. Using heat would would kill the "spring" property of the metal.
There's always the option of adding 1" nylon spacers on top of the existing springs!

Done properly I can't see why it wouldn't work, but I don't know that it would be any cheaper than new springs.
Springs have a "shape memory" and work through elastic (non-permanent) deformation. To permanently stretch them you're creating a plastic (permanent) deformation, which isn't normally good.
I guess that to do the job properly you'd need to perform the appropriate heat treatment (whatever that is) to "set" the new shape. A spring maker would be required to do this properly, and I expect they would charge more to reset coils (if this is possible) than they would charge to create new ones.
I reckon you'd be better off trying to induce sag in "too long" springs.
yeh thanks guys. i dunno what to do, the LWB springs have sagged and hence the question on stretching them. Hudson iv definitely thought about cutting down the GQ springs, they cost me next to nuthing anyways thanks dan A1MAV , but yeh i remember it being suggested to think about a spring as a length of steel rather than a coil, the shorter that length is the harder it becomes to bend, and hence cutting down a long spring will make it 'more rigid' and might not flex much,... dunno might do it anyways. ill give some of the springmakers we use trhough work a bell and see what they say
I got my coils reset, and they were nothing but trouble.. kept sagging all the time.. yes they fixed them for me for nothin but it wasnt worht the trouble really.. just buy new ones

can you do it???
dean
mate we do this at work all the time for differant cars and 4x4s ,price wise we charge about $70 + tax per pair . ive done all my own car's and 4x4 's and never had a problem with sag .
You can do it your self in your home oven if it will fit.
Place in an oven at about 400deg F. Leave it for a few minutes and take it out. Let it cool and remove the spring from the compressor/stretcher. Hopefully you'll get both springs the same.
Really new springs arn't that dear.

Experience is something you don't get, until just after you need it.

Microwave them for 30 seconds
Or just warm with the oxy whilst stretching them with the high lift jack
