G'day all, have recently played with the timing on the 2F engine, replaced the points, plugs, leads, set the dwell angle and had a go at the timing... the mark on the fly wheel doesnt stay directly in line with the mark on the housing, it varies back and forth, with it lined up as best as i can get it, when backing off the gas i get VERY loud backfires every now and then and quite large flames out of the exhust pipe. have tried advancing and retarding the timing with no luck. still get the flames and backfiring. Anyone have any idea whats happening here?

Mine only did anything like that when the manifold was leaking a little.
