Post by brad 93hilux »

Hi, i was thinking of putting 33x12.5x15" cooper stt on my hilux.
I was wondering if anyone has good or bad reports about them....

I think that the Coopers are good but pricey. Check out the Dick Cepek's for a good all rounder. They have deeper tread depth than the Coopers and are cheaper.

of late with pricing..... yes they are a premiumly priced tyre but have come closer to the market of late..... price them up and you may be supprised....

rental power just got the exact set from fourby's and the price was very competitive with the others considered. he wanted them anyway having seen the 16, 33 equivelents in action on mine and phippseys....

about 7 of our group have them and not a complaint to date.... quiet on road sand good mud plenty of grip and rocks not a prob....and seem to be wearing well.... cheaper muds i find and cheap for a reason and can wear before you eyes- cooper is a reputable company getting good milage

just my thoughts

I'm happy with mine. The jury is still out on wear rates, but I don't think the wear is particularly bad.

? WTF ? Are you familiar with the term "Chinese Whispers?"

AFAIK, mine are from the first shipment to Australia, and they haven't been recalled.

I think you're getting your tyres crossed. The early S/Ts had some issues, and there's been a recent recall on some 285/75-16 tyres made by Cooper Tires - but not all Cooper branded. The STT wasn't part of this recall.

So, I'll call. You've heard from "alot of people?" How many? Name some names. Get them to come here and tell us all about their personal experiences with these horrendous tyres.

I reckon either you're full of it, or "they" are. Prove me wrong.

gotta agree with Scott on this one...i think you are full of it

i have the STTs on my patrol and have so far done 30 000ks plus on them and wear so far is minimal and they have been very hard ks as well.. 4 trips to Sydney towing loaded car trailers, 2 trips to Fraser Island where they work awesome in the sand as well as numerous trips to Ormeau and other tracks over the time where they have copped an absolute flogging and perform as good as the Jungle Trekkers i used to use as my offroad tyres only...

MONEY WELL SPENT is about all i can say about the Coopers and  to Ryano and the crew from Fourbys for supplying, fitting and maintaining them with checkups and balancing every 5000ks

give him a call on 07 3892 2766 if you want good service and prices on them

Any idea which ones, or where I can get more info? The Cooper's website doesn't mention anything about a recall. (at least not that I could find...)

What about lugs chipping off?
It's what the the ST's (not new STT) are famous for but in their defence rocky hill climbs are not their main application.
The STT lugs don't look like they'd be prone to this but why did Cooper experiment with differing compounds - ie ST/C?

What about 'roundness'?
Any major probs balancing and staying that way?
My ST's are great but I do get an 'oscillation' noise at speed on road. Not a bad problem for me as there's no discernable vibration transfer to steering wheel. Could be where the rumors of them going 'out of round' come from though.
Any reports on the new STT's v this issue?
I used to have a significant vibration throughout vehicle (especially steering wheel) at about 105 indicated kph. This could be because a front rims counter balance fell off but that vibration is nowhere near as evident now. Maybe some other balance weights have fallen off elsewhere or maybe the tyres have bulged to coincidentally compensate...

What about new STT v old STT?
I liked the look of the old but never got to try them.
Is there any point comparing or are the new ones way too different?

I'm keen on a set of the new STT's too - I like their speed rating, hope the tread is suited to more gnarly bush work and yay, I often do the odd beach run.

The serial number "0904" to "0306" means tyres manufact. from 9th week 2004 to 3rd week 2006. If you have "whites out" the serial number will be on the inside (ie, the serial appears on the non-white side).

It only effected the ST pattern. There were some other brands caught up in it though.

dont speak shit mate.

Your teachers at school???????????????????

How old are you?

My guess is you, or your imaginary friends are making up stories. I had stts on my hilux, and now have stcs and both are extremely good. The only reason i have the sts now is because i dont go hard enough to warrant putting another set of stts on.

There has not been a recall on STT's.
There has been a voluntary recall on 285/75R16 Cooper ST that were produced in one particular factory from the states.

My ST's have been recalled.

Went back to fourby's and was told they would call me when they arrive.

But between now and then my cruiser is on a 12 week 15,000 km cross aust trip. So when it gets back I get new tyres all over again.

Well at the start i said i know a couple of people who dont like them. Then i said i know 2 people who had them recalled. I then found out one had st's (sorry) but the other guy still says his stt's were recalled also. When you asked the question did you only wanrt people to say "I love them" or did you want to hear what some people actually thought of them?

I'm not a big fan of the cooper stt myself, here's why:

Sometime in october '05 I bought a set of 5. In november after getting a rear bar with two wheel carriers, I bought a 6th because over xmas we did a trip from brisbane->sydney->merimbula->vic coast to melbourne->great ocean road to adelaide->port augusta->strzelecki desert->innamincka->then back to brisbane.

Between the time I purchased the tyres and left on that trip, I did a fair bit of weekend warrior stuff at ormeau, LCMP and a few other places and gave them a pretty good workout. They worked pretty well both on and off road and are fairly quiet on bitumen considering their aggressiveness.

However they seemed to chip and chunk a lot. Then fairly early on into the xmas trip (all bitumen at that point), one of them lost a lug leaving bits of thread/cord showing underneath. I changed the tyre out with one of my spares.

By Adelaide, another tyre started leaking air through a split in the sidewall. Admittedly, this was where I had copped a mild staking earlier on - just enough to scratch the surface a bit so I guess with the stress of the laden car and the big miles, it opened up enough to leak. Would another tyre have been more resistant? Maybe, maybe not - conjecture really, so I call 'fair enough' for this one and note it down as my fault.

I changed it out with the second spare and bought two MTR's as new spares because at that point I a) didn't want to buy more coopers until I'd gotten advice regarding the first tyre that lost a lug and b) it would've taken 2-3 days to get them in according to several adelaide tyre shops.

A few weeks after I returned, another cooper tyre lost a lug, pretty much like the first. I've always run appropriate pressures in my opinion - I air down off road and carry a compressor and air back up on the bitumen, according to the load I'm carrying.

By this time, two of the coopers had done about 20,000 and looked to have only about another 10,000-20,000 in them tops, the other two had done about 14,000 - and didn't look a lot better.

I went back to fourbys where I bought them from and they were awesome as usual - they took back the really worn tyres and contacted coopers for me - meanwhile, after talking to ryan and describing exactly what sort of 4by'ing I do and asking him if I'm just being too hard on the tyres, he suggested I try some baja radials - so gave me a great deal on a set of those.

Shortly after he got back to me with word from cooper, who had come to the party on 50% of 3 of the tyres I'd bought. Not perfect, but still pretty good - they stood up behind their product a heap better than a lot of other companies I've dealt with previously.

In summary, my opinion of the tyre based on my experience with them, is that they are really an all-terrain, probably best used for touring including light to medium bushwork - the kind of stuff that middle-aged blokes with beards, akubras and LC100/pajero/prados like to do :) It's my opinion that they don't stand up real well to the rough stuff.

At least coopers the company seem to stand behind them pretty well though, and if you're lucky enough to be able to buy tyres from fourbys and call in there when something goes wrong, you're guaranteed to be looked after.

we'll see how the radial claws go - they grip a lot better than the stt's, that's for sure. not much noisier on bitumen either

also, I forgot to post a pic of the first tyre that lost a lug:
Image

second one that lost a lug looked similar

hey mousie, I had a similar thing to you :)
