Mitsubishi L200 diff ratio

I have just rebuilt a 1981 L200 Express 4WD and found the diff ratio (4.875) terrible. I have transplanted a Pajero 5 speed gearbox into my old 4 peed which has helped but am now wondering if there is another diff that could be fitted to improve economy. Any body know if the 3.9 diff from a two wheel drive could be fitted front and rear? Any help would be thankfully recieved.
