Coily spooks

I have only ever owned leaf sprung spooks but have the opportunity to get a coily at the right money. There doesnt seem to be many that are 'built'???...as in tricked up. Are there any major reasons why they are not too popular with the offroaders??

The transfer case on some coilys is not suitable for aftermarket gearing - this can be replaced with an earlier model transfer case if you want a rockhopper.

There is some questions over the "liftability" of the coils sprung units with some suspension failures (mainly the brackets holding the front axle in place)......

Both are solveable - there's a thread about 6" spring lift kits being developed on this forum..... I dunno but I reckon 6" lifted coils can make for a damn tough little coily sierra.... I wouldnt be suprised in time if the EFI coily becomes the sierra weapon of choice.

Seems to me to be a budget thing too. Older sierras are cheap & plentiful and SPOA etc can be done cheap with some fabbing skills. This makes for a pretty capable and cheap toy, hence their popularity for hardcore stuff.

Jimny's are taking off like coil sierras never did with lots of tough stuff around already, hopefully coily's will follow suit. A lot of the jimny stuff is stronger gear to replace weak links in suspension/ chassis etc. Some r&d like this could solve some probs that suzuki viagra mentioned IMO

It wasnt off anything it was custom made but you can mod an arb to fit the same even if they ARB say they dont fit !! :roll:

BUY IT.ive owned 1 leaf and 2 coilys.every 4b has its problems you just have to overcome them.no offence to leafy guys but i reckon the coilys shit over the leaf sprung zooks.yes they are worse to mod than a leafy
but it can be done.ive got a 2"susp.lift and 2"body lift,gear driven t-case,1.6 efi,4 wheel discs,31 claws,and a heap of other stuff.as fpr the
up to 6"lift,hopefully ill be the first in QLD to have it.

Hey there, my coily has 6inch spring lift (also had 3 inch body lift, but this has been taken out) , I live in QLD. Liam, Greg and others know this white coily hardtop, I got it from Bozzie, it's the one that sat on it's nose for about 20 seconds at the Nissan Trials a few years ago. There is a pic of it on the Sugarloaf4x4 homepage top right hand side on it's nose. Funny thing is, it also made it onto funniest home video show

That said, I have never owned a leafy, but I love my coily and either way you can't go wrong leaf or coils!

hey tampy,

i know the zook you own, was in the club with boz when he got it, it was a sic rig, he use to have so much fun in it. Also is there any chance you could send me a pic of the front spring cradle that he made, planning on making some up for my coily and i dont have a clear pic of it, also pm me if you want some pics, i got heaps.

I heard about another issue with the coiler sierra's last night - due to the windscreen not being removable (i.e. it is part of the body tub) - if you roll the car and damage the windscreen surround the car is effectively a write off...

Does that sound right?

I guess

Though i know down there that the coiler's are a fair bit more costly than a leafer is... But i guess if you were serious about using it as a 4wd, and not considering it's re-sale value you could always swap a leafer body onto it once it's trashed...

No coily, looks like I might be getting my old spook back. You know a vehicle that you get rid of and then wish you never did? I have the oppportunity to get it back so looks like it might happen.. It was a 94 w/t.

After having spoken to Rod at the OneStop Suzi Shop, Iqueried why there why there was not a front locker readily available for coily sierra.

He stated that the cvs in the front were different and weaker than the ones in the leaf and break if pushed.

Yup. the coil sierra front end is pretty much unique.

It is 35mm wider than a WT in the axle tubes.

The axles and cv's are 1.0 litre size :cry:

The hubs have vitara style wheelbearings

The diff is a high pinion version with a 3.9 ratio

The knuckles are all back to front - the tie rid is behind the diff all 80 series styley, and the brake caliper mounts are cast into the knuckle.

Overkill have made front airlockers work, but the CV/axle issues stand.
