Controller box's for Warns.

Anyone seen one of these? what are they like, what are they about, and how terrifying is the $?

What are they about? Use electronics instead of clicky clicky solenoids. If u short out a relay u replace it, u short out that u throw it away
Looks very bling though, im sure they will start to show up on the big $$ rigs, not because they are good but because the are different, big $$ and look cool.

id hate to think the moneys, a normal control box for a Warn 8000 is $468 retail...
wont be rushing to buy one, sounds pretty fricken

Although bling/cool the MOSFET controllers are aimed at the non-professional
mum/dad rigs. They have lotsa safety stuff (high temp cut out,
high current cut-out), which would get in the way of that last winchoff
control point.
Over the next few yoears you will see the mosfets drop to half the price
of the solenoids. It's just that it is new right now, the component cost would
be significantly less than a good set of solenoids.
Even though I'm an electronics engineer by trade, I'll stick with solenoids
as I can get in there and bridge one out if I get stuck.

Matthew, since your into these types of things, does it need to be that big? I would imagen there would be a lot of spare space in there?

Agreed, and the fact that they will probably have several MOSFETS in
parallel, maybe 4 for each leg of the bridge = 16 MOSFETS, with
each one needing to be solidly mounted onto a piece of heatsink,
they will take up quite an area.
Even if you can get the on resistance down below 0.05 ohms per leg
of the bridge that is still 30 watts at 300A. Those guys will get hot!
The only thing I see in their favour is possible fine control of
line speed, then again, I can't see my low mount with a
snatch block going any slower

Ok i was thinking that the housing was the heat sink and the rest was sealed as it say, wouldnt be much point in having heatsinks inside if it was sealed would it?
