The exhaust also has to exit on the drivers side or the rear because my dad had to put the exhaust out the back of his humvee when he converted it to rhd, it used to point out the passengers side but the engineer said it cant point at pedestrians especially being a diesel

95% sure in qld it must exit via the rear of the vehicle

trust me you do not want diesel exhaust right next to your seat, the fumes give you nice headaches after a while :drinking:

in vic it can exit either side up untill mid nineties. but has to be around certian distance not much from memory. in my bj73 it runs down the side and exits in front of the rhd rear tyre.

I think he means if its a side pipe has to be drivers side, like buses and if its a rear pipe, either side is ok

It needs to be within about a foot of the rear od the cabiun - so side exits ilegals for single cab utes - out left past rear tyre is normally legal for other cars.

Depend on the year model. The ADR also requires that the exhaust is behind the rear axle and not outside of the silouette of the vehicle when viewed from above (stackes excepted).

No 100% sure if the state regs will give you an exemption from this if is a later year model vehicle.

12. EXHAUST SYSTEMS

Modified and alternative exhaust systems are permitted if they satisfy the following requirements:

The exhaust outlet must extend at least 40 mm beyond the furthermost outboard or rearmost joint of the floor pan which is not continuously welded or permanently sealed which could permit direct access of exhaust gases to the passenger compartment, but must not protrude beyond the perimeter of the vehicle when viewed in plan.
If to the side of the vehicle, the exhaust outlet must discharge downwards at an angle to the horizontal of not less than 15 degrees nor more than 45 degrees, and to the rear of any adjustable window or vent; if the vehicle is manufactured after June 1988, the discharge must be to the right-hand side of the vehicle.
If to the rear of the vehicle, the exhaust outlet must discharge at not more than 10 degrees above or 45 degrees below the horizontal.
No exhaust system whether it be functional or ornamental is to be mounted in such a manner as to create a hazardous situation particularly from hot surfaces or projections.
All piping and muffler systems must be adequately supported.
Exhaust extractors may be fitted to a motor vehicle manufactured before July 1976, provided they do not foul any part of the steering, suspension, braking or fuel systems. In all other cases evidence either in the form of an Approval Certificate or acceptable evidence from the extractor manufacturer to show that the vehicle continues to comply with all applicable emission regulations will be required.

Evidence from the extractor manufacturer is acceptable if it includes information:

identifying the extractors as appropriate ones for the vehicle;
certifying that the extractors have all the features and fittings necessary to allow the vehicle's emission control system to be reconnected and work properly; and
describing how the extractors should be fitted.

The vehicle must continue to comply with the ground clearance requirements.

There must be no escape path for exhaust gases other than the exhaust outlet, and the vehicle must continue to comply with the noise emission standards applicable to it

Ok i found the modification hand out

Ben, your exhaust system you want to install i can not see it being legal

Rules are similar except the before july 1976 law on extractors, has no listing of years

hehe doesn't say you can't have a stack, as long as the outlet angle is acceptable

i will piont it slightly out and down. near the tyre. i want to keep it tuck away and safe form rocks and stuff. i can't see fumes being a problem if it is done right. but if some one has a BJ and hads tried this before. it would be good to hear your reason's.

thanks ben

G'day all,

I was wondering what the legalities are in NSW about diesel exhausts. I assume it's not allow to finish anywhere under the vehicle? and must be out the side or the back?

The reason I ask is my project has a SWB Series landy body and the exhaust runs down the middle, currently it stops just after the muffler (approx 500mm from last opening window & door) and just need to know if I have to make another piece of pipe to run out the back or not.

Yeah, I douubt anyone will pull you up for it. As for rego inspections just don't go to an exhaust shop to get yours... just as if you had borderline tyres you wouldn't go to a tyre shop

My mates old 81 troopy has the exhaust coming out on the left hand side just behind the passenger door.
So i guess thats illegal. Correct :?:

A lot of depends on year model. The requirement for where your exhaust discharges is not determined by the regulations cover "external noise".

It is coverd by ADR 42 (General Safety Requirements). This came into force in 1989 so any vehicle build before this would not have had to comply with it when they were originally manufactured.

It also depends on the category of vehcile. "Goods Vehicles" can have a stack exhaust where as passenger car vehcile can not. Generally speaking most utes are commercial vehicles and wagons are passenger cars, however there are exceptions to this.

Becareful assuming becaue you have seen something that it must be legal. I've had several mods that weren't legal, just no one ever picked them up.
