I'm planning on buying a Patrol/Safari. The problem is that they are not, nor have they ever been sold here in North America. I will of course be importing one from Japan. I'm curious how they sound.

Diesels are few and far between here. They only diesels are trucks, buses, construction equipment and a few german cars like VW and Mercedes. I'd just love to hear what the TD42 sounds like. Care to help me out?

Not knowing how much research you have done on the subject, you realise that Japanese drive on the left and their vehicles are RHD. You may want to source vehicles that are LHD and places like Dubai and the Phillipines come to mind. Not sure whether this is possible but LHD would be a better option.

Which part of the states are you located in by the way?

I am in Canada. It is legal to import JDM vehicles that are at least 15 years old. I cannot import from other countries.

RHD does not bother me. In fact it has a certain amount of "coolness factor".

I'd still love to have a sound bite.

Can the USA import from other countries and then you purchase from over the border?

I don't think so. It is much more difficult to import vehicles to the US. It is also cheaper to import directly into Canada.

The problem with importing from countries other than Japan is that there is no network set up to do it. So it would be very difficult to get all the details worked out.

You could capture with a microphone and laptop, or a PDA. Both my Palm and Pocket PC can capture wav sound clips.

I've been hooked for quite a while already. I just have to come up with the $12000 CDN and wait 4-6 weeks to import a truck from Japan. Oh, and I have to convince the "boss" that this is a necessary expenditure. I don't think she'll be too keen.

Thanks everyone for your files. I'm still considering importing one from Japan. But I've gotten quite a few comments about the truck not being at all suitable for North American highways. I don't expect sports car performance, but I do expect to be able to easily and safely get up to highway speeds (100 to 120 km/h) both towing a 900kg trailer and not towing. I figured a 6 cyl diesel would have more than adequate power for towing and for regular driving. But people are telling me otherwise. They're telling me the truck is a real dog on accelerating.
An aftermarket turbo is an option but adds considerable cost and complexity. I'd rather keep that as a future upgrade. But if the vehicle can't pull a trailer and can't do highway speeds easily, then I won't even bother.
Any thoughts?

im sure the jap imports have a factory turbo and they would be fine on the highway,but then again im not sure what u guys call cruzing on the highway as overthere u have huge engines in everything for no reason

An aftermarket Turbo tuned properly running around 12psi with a set of 33" tyres, will see you cruising comfortably on 120km/h with trailer/boat whatever. The taller ratio offered by having the larger tyres combined with the power of the turbo will give you a suitably large

I've got contacts in ANL shipping and a mate who imports Harley's from the States, is it worth looking into exporting 'aussie' fourby's to the States and Canada?

There is becoming a large market for importing vehicles from Japan to Canada. I'm not sure the regulations for the US but here in Canada, we can import vehicles 15 years old or older. That's to get around the safety issues (seatbelts, etc). So up to 1991 vehicles to the exact manufacture date.

I haven't come across anyone offering vehicles from any country other than Japan though. Not sure of the logistics involved. The most popular imports here are Toyota LandCruisers, Toyota Hilux Surf, Nissan Terrano, Nissan Safari (Patrol), Nissan Skyline (turbo 4WD), and a few others. I admit that I don't know how they compare to the vehicles offered in Australia and New Zealand.

Looking at prices, here is an estimated breakdown of landed vehicle costs (all 1991 vehicles with <100000 km):
Safari - $8K to 13K
Terrano - $6K to 10K
Skyline - $10K to 20K
LandCruiser - $10K to 20K
Hilux Surf - $6K to 10K

These prices would include shipping, taxes and import fees. All figures are in Canadian dollars. There is a lot of companies offering import services here from Japan. So unless you can beat those prices, there wouldn't be any point in trying.

In Japan, they are auctioning off their low km vehicles. That's the lure for us Canadians. Low kms, and no rust is critical. And the prices are in line with what we would pay for a vehicle that is slightly newer but with more km. For instance: I run a 1995 Pathfinder 3.0V6. It is in great shape with 200K. I could probably get $6000 for it. Or I could import a 1991 Terrano TD27 with 70K for about $8000. Plus I'd get the diesel which has never been offered here.

If you want more info, do a google on JDM and Canada. I'd be willing to act as a Canadian contact for Aus exporting. But only if it would be worthwhile for you, me and the potential buyers.

Talk to Wayne Smith in Calgary, Alberta. He brings Landcruisers and the odd Safari directly into Canada from Japan.

We're only paying a little less for 'em over here and as we aussies travel big distances on a day to day basis the only place you'd find a pre-91 with <100000kms is in a showroom!!

My td42 shorty safari is n/a scuba and I have no hassles cruising at 110 - 120 km/h with 35's on it. It is a bit sluggish towing my 12ft fibreglass skiboat but nothing to bad.
I noticed you said you wanted a jap import because they have no rust. Just look extra hard because mine had rust on it, nothing to bad...just the rear quarter which is getting cut off next time I bash it in anyway
