What's with the 4.8 Patrol?

Only just noticed that the (new) GU IV Patrol 4.8 has 180 kW and 400 Nm, whereas the earlier ones (GU III) had 185 kW and 420 Nm.
Did they mess around with it when they updated to the new body?

Maybe they detuned them so they would use less fuel ...

Actually it is a bit unusual for a manufacturer to go backwards with HP figures however it might be that they were a bit optimistic in the first place?? Maybe they are setting it right now?
Or was the earlier model 185 Bhp or crank HP? Maybe the earlier one was measured at the flywheel and the later at the wheels? Is that possible?

Like stricter Euro III standards? Might be right as that's on the short horizon for manufacturers ... apparently thats why GM dropped the Gen III motor in favour of the 6.0 litre L76 ... the Gen III didn't meet euro III spec.

while on the 4.8 topic, does anyone know if the handbrake on this model is on the diff??
more importantly, anyone know what is in this pic??

1) If you mean if it is a typical handbrake or transmission handbrake - the answer is typical handbrake.
2) Can't help you with the pic.

cheers, that about all i needed to know apart from how i make it so that this doesnt get used anymore....
i already got a handbrake on my transfer case.

search the Patrol forum, there are plenty of negative changes on the new 4.8.. robin went to trade his in, and the dealer couldnt tell him why he should.

plenty of 2nd hand 4.8 patrols around at the moment, with fuel prices making them hard for the trade to move, meaning the 2nd hand price of them has dropped.

Slightly off the thread but has anyone know of a 4.8 being put in a GQ?
Is the bottom end of the motor ( ie crank) completely different from the 4.2 and 4.5?

I read in a car mag (not sure if it was Wheels or what) that the gen III doesn't meet Euro III specs in it's
standard mass produced form hence GM worldwide has dropped it in favour of the larger 6.0 litre LS2 or LS76 (can't remember).
Are you saying that it meets Euro III in standard form or that you were able to get one passed with some form of mods? Sounds like the latter if you got help from Holden.
