Another damn headlights/spotty question....

Ive searched and searched and cannot find a thread covering this problem so here goes.
Im hooking up some spotties in my MK patrol. Used the wiring diagram thats been posted in a previous thread from the land rover site i think?
What i have is a 3 way switch that has on/off/on with high beams. All the wiring is done except i cant find which wire is the high beam wire to tap into. What ive found is when i turn my low beams on two of the three wires going into the back of the head lights receive power. When i turn the highs on only one receives power. But, and here is where my problem is, this wire that recieves power when the highs are on also receives power when the lows are on, therefore according to my logic (and it may be wrong ) if i tap into this wire the spotties will be on when highs or lows are on, and i dont want this. Does anybody know what the deal is?
I have pulled the headlight switch off the steering column to have a look at what is going on at that end and its the same. When lows are on all 5 contacts are closed. WHen highs are on two of the contacts are broken and no new contacts are made. Im very confused. Any help would be appreciated.
Cheers
