Another damn headlights/spotty question....

Ive searched and searched and cannot find a thread covering this problem so here goes.

Im hooking up some spotties in my MK patrol. Used the wiring diagram thats been posted in a previous thread from the land rover site i think?

What i have is a 3 way switch that has on/off/on with high beams. All the wiring is done except i cant find which wire is the high beam wire to tap into. What ive found is when i turn my low beams on two of the three wires going into the back of the head lights receive power. When i turn the highs on only one receives power. But, and here is where my problem is, this wire that recieves power when the highs are on also receives power when the lows are on, therefore according to my logic (and it may be wrong :)) if i tap into this wire the spotties will be on when highs or lows are on, and i dont want this. Does anybody know what the deal is?

I have pulled the headlight switch off the steering column to have a look at what is going on at that end and its the same. When lows are on all 5 contacts are closed. WHen highs are on two of the contacts are broken and no new contacts are made. Im very confused. Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers

I am no whiz at these things but I usually get there in the end, a couple of years ago I tried to find a problem with my MQ light system and can remember the design confused me like none before and since, until I stumbled on the problem.
Could be wrong but try the exact same test on the other headlight I vaguely remember you may have more luck on finding the headlight power wire only to trigger your relay.

good luck fnq

Yep - posative is always on, it's the earth that gets switched on/off. You can still use it to switch a relay, just wire one side of the relay's coil to +, and the other side to the switched negative from the high beam.

Yep, negative switch, but i had to go a bit further up the wiring chain. Still couldnt find it behind the headlight... wierd...

Thanks for the help guys!
