Building a steel tray

I am wanting to build a steel tray for mu GU. I will be useing 75 x 50 mm RHS for the sides and 50 x 30mm RHS for the inside support, 20mm difference to allow for a lip around outside of the tray.
Would this size steel be enough support, i wont be carrying much?
I am thinking of checker plating it, what would be a good thickness checker plate to use, i was thinking 3 to 4mm.
I won't be doing a chassis chop, (as much as I'd like to)

hi mate, i reckon aluminium checkerplate would be the best option as while it costs more than steel its long term maintenance if far less and also much lighter. obviously youd also need a 30x20 section welded round the inside face if the perimeter to support the edges of the sheet (or angle is better) regardless of sheet comosition but the alloy option could be neatly cut and marine style riveted into place. by adding a few extra supports underneath it could take the same load as a steal tray without the added weight. 3mm wal is enough for section size.

www.edconsteel.com.au as i use these guys a bit and find their prices are good, they also have all the section and sheet sizes your likely to need though i dont think their in your neck of the woods it'll give you a good idea what you can use. then again if ur upto the task of knocking up ur own tray youve probably got it covered.

On a patrol the 75x50 RHS looks to small, use 100x50 on the outside if you have not already bought it.

I'm thinking 100 x 50 might be to heavy, its a full tray I wont be chassis cutting it

The weight will depend on the wall thickness of the steel you plan on using.

that edcon steel web site has the weight per metre for all sections.
