PLASMA CUTTER: what brand?

so yeh my old man is gonna buy a plasma cutter
whats the best brand names to get
what brand does every one have and what size cut does it make

uni plas 410. cuts 10mm neatly. the handpiece is a running expense, watch out for it ceramics that take nothing to brake $10, tips $5, contact tips $5 ends up similar to $ in grinding discs until you learn to use it

The critical thing with all plasma cutters is a clean air supply and especially no water through them. When I had my multi amperage 60/90/120amp Uniplas machine the way it went through electrodes and ceramics it was really expensive and I was running a "water trap" at the time. Luckily I knew an "old school" welding machine repairer and he put on a "toilet roll" type filter in the air line and it cut the consumables cost waaaaay down.

ahh ok so are there more aftermarket type water traps/air filters for compressors out there?

i have had a quick look and haven't found any better water traps as yet. i have heard that water kills them too and so does leaving the earth off. will keep looking

For a home/small fab workshop i would reccomend a lincoln procut 25. single phase and cannot fault it. 3/8" reccomended max thickness, but ideal for 6mm and less. pricing is around the 2k mark.
for the heavy duty (also perfect for thin stuff), i'd reccomend the liquidarc v40 (40mm max) This mother pumps. phisical size is big, but its easy to get a nice cut in anything. price i think is around the 5k mark.
we have both these in our workshop and are used and abused everyday for the last 3 years atleast. They have cut anything from copper, to ally and never had to replace anything apart from the consumables - tips and guides.

one big warning though! if you pick up one you will NEVER BE ABLE TO WORK WITHOUT IT AGAIN. THIS IS A FACT. best money i ever spent. things like tube notching, chassis work etc. a good example is i was looking how to lower my panhard after 2 minutes i had cut it off, cereal box templates and a complete new bracket in less than half the time of bodging up the old one. everthing you build will have sexy curves and finished to new levels. it is like comparing stick to tig or grinder to plasma
