..or person anyway!
I want more power out of my trol
currently, 92 GQ 4.2 efi dual fuel, extractors, snorkel, 2.5"exhaust
Does anyone have any suggestions/advice/warnings about a power up
currently thinking of either
a) supercharge 4.2 and run straight gas, discard efi or,
b) V8 conversion, pref 350chev, but holden 308 might be cheaper(can buy complete car and wreck for parts), nissan infinity 4.4l (i know f all about these)
c) V6 conversion (thinking for all the trouble might as well go an 8)
If anyone else has been down this road before or knows whats involved as far as adaptors, etc help/advice would be appreciated

Actually I'm thinking for a rebuilt or even second hand engine Chev might be cheaper & more poke too.
Anyone know some sites to price some Chev/Holden blocks/injection gear etc?
Looking for a small Chev 304-327, they all seem to be 350 nowdays.
I believe someone used to sell a complete 350 alloy block too.

If you are willing to go straight gas then I think the 350 chev is the easy answer...

I'm not willing to go straight gas, I don't do enough commuting km's to warrant it, fuel price doesn't worry me, I only fill once a month.

I converted my carby shorty to efi motor supercharged straight fuel and love it, no issues with reliability, if it throws a belt you can still drive home and plenty of power. Complete changover cost doing no work myself and mates rates on parts and labour, second hand charger and motor.....
$9000
worth every cent
Rob
P.s. The only other way i was considering was straight fuel Gen 3, although turbo was tempting, more power for same dollars but compromise reliabilty and put motor under more stress, also more custom bits to be made

Rob, mine is already an efi engine. What sort of supercharger did you use? How is it mounted? Are you running an extra belt off your balancer pully, or only one alternator belt? Who did the install? Have you piggybacked the computer or put a new one to regulate fuel comsumption with the new influx of forced oxygen? Any cooling enhancements necessary, bigger radiator or anything?
I was actually under the impression i would have to convert my efi to carby in order to fit supercharger to manifold. You may have just made up my mind for me. Any more info would be greatly appreciated.

Yeah Hoonz I'm not real keen on turbo's in petrol 4b's because of turbo lag. Money wise its six of one, half a dozen of the other so you might as well have the power instantly throughout the whole rev range

Went to a wedding on Saturday and the bridal car was an FC fitted with a 3 litre Nissan 6 from a VL. It was Supercharged. He bought the SC from Eagle Wreckers in Dandenong for about 1K, it was brand new. He had milled an inch or so of aluminium block the same shape as the supercharger bottom flange, which he had tapped and drilled to take allen bolts to lock down the SC. The bottom of the aluminium plate was then milled to fit the air intake on the normal manifold. The motor was EFI and he runs petrol only. The serpentine belt was measured and it was brought from a normal belt supplier. It was a neat finish.

It is a vortech V-1 supercharger side mounted on the left hand side of the motor. The dual battery cradle had to be moved back towards the firewall, i still have all the original belts and pulleys and an extra pulley for the charger hangs off the front of the balncer.
My radiator fan had to be cut to clear the tensioner. An 80 degree gooseneck needs to be welded onto the radiator at the top hose to turn the hose fast enough to clear the charger.
Obviously a bigger fuel pump that was electric rather than the old carby mechanical one. I also bought an autronic computer and surge tank. It really needs an intercooler to run properly and is tuned very conservatively at the moment.
You will also need a new snorkel if you have a safari one or similar. The power steering resevoir needs to be moved, not hard job and it could do with a cooler on the power steering as well.
That price above was after i subtracted all the parts i could sell from my old setup like elec ignition, my old motor etc... I was lucky enough to pick up the charger as a bolt on kit for my car from darren (krimnl) and the computer, surge tank and loom from another mate so that saved me some dollars as well, the labour is the killer unless you do it yourself or buy a new vortech v1 for $2600

Wanna come for a drive?
Rob
P.s. don't forget to check with your insurance
