Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Drove up to Moora and back on the weekend...only problem was i had to refill! I drove from my place to Moora and only got back as far as Bindoon before I had to refill again.

So out of a 95 Litre tank, i got 260 kays.

Something must seriously be wrong.

1988 LWB GQ patrol
4.2L Petrol Auto (carby)
4" suspension lift, 2" body lift. 35" cooper ST's

Is it just me or is this thing using alot more fuel than its supposed to? Can i check anything? It doesnt leak fuel, engine bay doesnt smell of fuel after just running. What could it be?

could have a fuel leak,carby set wrong or just rooted,timing,theres a few things it could be,but it sounds very high so that will suck the fuel

what sort of fuel consumption should i be expecting? 25L per 100 kays?

is your speedo accurate? The 35s could be throwing it out and making it look worse than it is. Even so though you'd be looking at 30 litres/100km... still bad but almost believable when you're running such big heavy tyres and sitting up in the air so high and with an auto transmission.

How is the exhaust? Does it smell rich or anything?

There have been a few threads lately that all sound like it's time for a good service of the TB42 carby, they do mess up when they get dirty and can benefit from a good clean-up.

depend how u drive,95L to 400kms sounds fearas ur speedo will be out and the big lift will cause it to eat more fuel

See, if your speedo is calibrated for ~ 30" tyres and you are running 35" tyres, you really did around 300km, not 260km.

Also, how did you calculate the fuel consumption? The only accurate way to do this is to fill up, start counting kms, then fill up. It's the number of litres you put in the SECOND time that you have to calculate the kms with.

The speedo had been calibrated to 33" tyres.

I used 90 litres exactly. So i suppose it would have ended up working out to be about 34 L per 100 kays still

We drove back from outback challenge a couple of years ago, nissan gq dual cab petty on 35s, averaged about 40 YES....... 40 litres to 100 kms. could not work it out, ran beautiful, no fuel leaks. Found out later on when home that as you would apply the accelerator the choke was opening up as well. did not affect how it went at speed but fark did it use some fuel.
After completely rebuilding the carby it went back to about 20 litres to 100kms.
Last patrol I sold ran 37s on it, 4.88 gears, and got about 450 kms to a 95 litre tank. Mates shortie runs 36s, 4.88s and gets about 450 kms from a 85 litre tank. Gearing has made huge difference for us.

Bloody hell!! somebody didn't pull a jerrycan or two out of it overnite?? and to think I nearly bought a petrol because of the rebuild costs relating to deso pumps and injectors!
Fit a vacume guage for the future and in the meantime disconnect the choke, wire the Bastard up solid!!.

Hope you find the problem, that is shit economy, even with a bit of a headwind and towing!

Not really related but I have found I am getting another 100 k's out of a tank when I switched to 98 octane fuel.
I have EFI but the mapping for ordinary unleaded must be way out.

Might be worth forking out for a tank of 98 octane and see how it goes...

Hmm yeah i might check the choke when i get home.

Same with mine - runs sweet as, no fuel leaks or anything.

Hey maybe this is why some return good figures and some crap! As per a previous post on fuel consumption, some people claim to get good mileage as low as 20 per 100 kms and some up into the 30's per 100 kms. Might explain the variances as it's difficult to put a 50% difference down to engine tune.

For the interim, how do i disconnect the choke and wire it up closed?

not really on the subject as i own a 85mk shortie just wondering wat mielage i should expect from it im runnin a l24 petty 4spd 4.6 diffs 2inch body lift and bout 2 inch suspension lift and 31s soon to run 33s

mine is a 4.2 carby, with 35's, and an auto..... went wheeling down at the Watagans on the weekend.... including the drive down and back... i used $170 worth of fuel in 2 and a half days doing about 460km (speedo said 415k's, and it's 10% out) $170 worth of fuel here is about 130 litres of liquid gold my maths isn't too good before i have finished my first cup of coffee...... but i don't think my figures are much better..... thats why i'm fitting a V8 on the weekend

Well doesnt seem to be a choke problem - the automatic choke is working fine. Tested it last night.
