at the moment there is a big motec computer under the drivers seat, does anyone have any ideas as to where to put it, may be impossible as there isn't to much wire to play with. Or would i be better off trying to seal it, if so how.

just move it up under the dash... the wires would come from there anyway so just coil them up.... much safer then under the seat (rangies dont seal all to well)

My 84 has been converted to EFi and using the standard computer which has been located up under the dash where the stereo is normally on the earlier models (before they figured out what a stoopid place that was for a stereo and put them in the middle :D ).

The size of a newspaper .. that's huge (got a vision of a sun herald or something ... is that right?). Is it even too big to fit under the dash where mine is? I've seen comp cars with computers mounted on the roof .. could you do that? Maybe a swing down type arrangement (if you got the length in the wiring harness although they can be lengthened)?

Cheers

I think someone like Graeme Cooper or Bruce Davis makes longer harneses as an off the shelf item to enable the relocation of the puter.

Have you tried a tupperware box? I did with mine, just cut a hole for the cable to run through and used some silicone for a water tight seal.

One question that I was wondering is do the EFI computers need to breath?

Cheers

hey thats a pretty cool idea, but yeah i was wondering if they need to breath aswel

The only reason i could think of for an EFI computer to need to breath (other than cooling) would be if it has an inbuilt map sensor to read amospheric pressure. In which case, it probably won't matter if its in a tub or not, as long as you don't pressurise it. Stock rangie ecus won't have internal map sensors (they have sensors in the airbox), but some aftermarket ones may, especially if they use a map sensor input from the engine.

One place you MAY be able to put it, is in the centre of the dash.... Not sure if the 88 rangies are the same as 84 off the top of my head, but on top of the dash, in the centre is a little tray, for putting coins or god knows what in (sunglasses in mine!). If you lift the bottom out of it, there are four screws holding it in, and you can access inside there. You can also get to it by dropping the cover in front of the drivers knees. To fit that size motec you'd have to go up from under the dash, and remove the heating duct so you could slide it in (refittable afterwards!). The only thing is, i know exactly the motec you are talking about, and it MAY be a bit too wide to fit in there.

I know the standard ones are quite a size and trying to do the same thing. I don't feel comfortable with it under the seat off-road and did this with my 93 Rangie, but they are about hallf the size of the old L-Ject flapper ECU.

Mine's an 87 and the vent on the drivers side doesn't work properly anyhow so I'll shoe-horn it in there

I know the space you r talking about, but i doubt it will fit in there, But then again. May have to use that tuppaware idea, would it be good to put foam inside to stop it from shaking around, and how would I seal around the wires apart from silicone, as i will never be able to get that stuff off if I have to.

You should take out the motec all together and revert to a much smaller setup with less hassles. Then you could maybe give the motec setup to me...
