Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Have a mate who was speaking to the service manager at hinterland toyota and he rekons the cruisers are going semi floating rears to cut costs.

I dont understand why toyota would do such a crazy thing. Has anyone else heard of this around the traps?

IIRC V8 100series are semi float rear.

whats the diffrence between a fully floating, semi floating and a non floating(is there such a thing)

does it realte to the way the bearing and etc suport the axles

Full Floating - 1978+ cruisers, leaf model GQ/GU, rover, the hub supports the weight of the car and the axle bolts to the hub (like on the front end). Generally stronger as the weight of the vehicle is not on the axle but on the bearings on the housing.

Semi float - hilux, very early model cruisers, GQ/GU coil rears, prado, zook, most 2wd cars... the entire weight of the car is supported by the bearings directly pressed onto the axles, sometimes called suicide axles because if you blow an axle at full noise you can shoot your wheel out sideways.

All Landcruisers [not sure when they started] have full floating rear diffs.
i have seen 100s V8s with non floating rear diff [much cheaper to produce.
Full floating is far superior to non floating.

ALL 100 series (IFS chassis) have had semi-floating rear axles since they came out in 1998. This includes all V8 (UZJ100) and turbo diesel (HDJ100) variants in Aust.

ALL 105 series (live axle or rigid front suspension RFS) continue to use the full floating rear axle design which all Cruisers have used for quite some time. Includes all 4.5 petrol (FZJ105) and 1HZ powered (HZJ105) in Aust.

I understand the new ones I beleive to be released december will be coil strut front end, not sure what they are doing in the arse
