what to buy...

Gday,
im considering buying a 90s Pajero and would prefer a Diesel, they are pretty rare to fine.
I have seen a few 90s Jackaroo Diesels with reasonably low kms and also at very good prices.
i have a couple of Qs:
Do they have an LSD rear as standard? if so, how good is it?
how good is the IFS?
also how economical are the Diesels?
whats better, the auto or manual?

Hi dude, first up $ 13k is plenty for a mid 90's jack, you would even get into some post 98 updates for that money. But if you go the post 98 with the 3.0td make sure the injector recall is done and commit yourself to higher servicing costs due to 2 filters and synthetic oil requirements.
Having said that the 3.0td/auto package is a hell of a towing weapon.
Gearboxes were better in pre98s if you go a manual.
rear LSD is standard across all jacks AFAIK. and it is an excellent unit. rear axle has excellent articulation for a stock vehicle.
Front IFS is good, fair travell, great bumpstops in both directions (unlike a cruiser) bulletproof construction, you really have to do something very stupid to hurt one. you can lift around 40mm from stock without losing too much down travell, for zero cost.
An SE jack with a 40mm lift all round is a great capable tourer.

ill probably be able to spend about 15k now.
Im basically looking at Patrols, Pajeros and Jackaroos. it will be drivin mainly by my wife, and she sat in a couple the other day, and said she liked the seating position of the Patrol better than the Paj.
i havent looked very hard at Jacks yet though.
the Jacks are built by Isuzu aren't they? and just rebadged by holden?

jackaroos are yes isuzu,
if she looking more at city driving and and what not id says 3.0 L diesel jackaroo, generally diesel dosent drink as much as a petrol and is more lighter on the wallet.
personally i like manuals can get alot further on fuel then the autos,
i really cant say too much as i only owned the 85 2.3L DLX jackaroo petrol my first 4x4 but then i bought a real 4x4 i got the nissan patrol GQ
nissan patrol inTB42 really drink the juice

My mates got a late 80's Jack 2.6 petrol that he just cant kill. Takes whatever he throws at it.
Bruce Garland used to race stock and modified Jacks in rally's because he liked their reliability.
Peter Brock came second in the 98 Playstation Round Australia Rally in a stock petrol Jack.
Bruce Garland came 1st. in a very modified one.
You can get a max. of 3" lift in them with a Calmini kit but that's about it with a Jackaroo. 3" would be plenty anyway.
The old 2.8TD's are proven engines.
As said the 3.0lt. intercooled are better but for that recall which fixes the problem?

hey mate,dont listen to tyler,your paj or jakeroo will walk all over his cruiser all day long.I dont lie haha
.now........they are botha realy nice truck to own im sure,more of a road and light off road vehicle but you will still see alot of places im sure.We owned a petrol paj for years and yeah it struggled in the tuff stuff,but a lift,muddies and a locker soon changed that.Just enjoy,and atleast it will be quicker then my hilux up the road

we had a 4.2 diesel auto patrol and it was rediculus (spelling)as to the amount of fuel it would chew so we did a swap for a 94 jack and we recon it was the best thing we have ever done now to start the mods to the jack (without the missus finding out too much of course)

Just ask Mudslinger (Brad) of SA 4x4 Dismantlers at Lonsdale what he thinks of Jacks. He was amazed at how tuff his is.
