what is best set up for a 40

Hi guys i have a 78 model 40 series landcruiser just finished 5 lt connversion and wanting to know the best suspention set up was thinking off going coils but means alot of work and $$$ what leaf set up could i go i can get my hands on some 60 series diffs and leaf springs cheap are they any good to me

Easier than a coil setup or so i am told, however you still need to move either the front or rear or both mounts to account for the longer springs. and if you are going to use the 60 axles, you will need to outboard the front springs to account for the diff housing being further off-centre than the 40series

What do you mean by outboard the front springs.

the 60 axles are wider than the 40 series, and the diff sits an inch or so further right of the diff in the 40. So when you come to swap your springs and axles, the diff will be a bit more to the right of its current location. Have a look at where your right spring sits at the moment in relation to your diff. Its hard up against the diff. So moving the diff a bit to the right will require either some serious modification to the spring perches on the axle, or you need to move your springs out to compensate. Problem is then, they wont line up with your chassis rails, so you need to make mounts that extend slightly out from the chassis for the front springs.
I love qld, completely illegal here.

How much money you looking at spending?
How much time can you have your car off the road for?
How handy with the spanners/welder/fab are you?
How much lift you looking at?
Coils are alot of work but definitely do-able. If it was me doing it I would get 80series diffs as they already have the mounts etc. on them.
If your after a milder lift, some shackles and a body lift will easily have room for 35s to sit under the guards.
IMO the easiest and cheapest way to go (in terms of off road ability) is a springover. If you can do it yourself you'll save heaps. I did mine and it cost me well under a grand which included the purchase of a later model front diff with discs up front which if you have a V8 and havent already done, I would look at before doing the suspension.
Longer brakelines, a double arm, new bolts, new spring perches and you're done.
NB if you live in Queensland this mod is illegal for road use!
