1st gear ratio
x
transfer case l/range ratio
x
Diff ratio
=
total ratio.

I have 4.8 diff gears and 4.8 rockhoppers and have around 90 to 1, mixed with the low torque of the desiel it crawls very well

1st gear x transfer case low x diff ratio
ie, My Mav 4.556 x 3.743 x 4.375 = 74.6 to 1 (74.6:1)
(Marks gearmaster low range = 3.743:1)

3.7 diffs
6.1 rockhopper
crawl 82 to 1
nice and slow with 31's

3.05:1 (tcase) x 1st gear ratio
4.843:1 and diff ratio of
4.11:1 =
60.7:1
Haven't tried it out yet - but it has to better than the standard 36.1:1.

i worked it out,
for stock 1980 lux,
3.93 (fisrt gear) x 2.28 (transfer) x 4.88 (diff) = 43.73:1
thanx ausyota

2.46 (c6 1st gear) x 1.98 (np205) x 3.5 (9") = 17.04 crawl? ratio
with 4.56 in the new 14b ff = 22.21
maybe a not so crawl ratio!

4.313 1st * 2.295 transfer * 4.875 diff = 48.25:1
All factory. not spectacular but it's a pretty big straight out of the box crawl ratio.

Hilux
1st 3.93 * low range(marks crawler gears) 3.743 * diff 4.5 = 66.19
soon to be 71.78 when I get some 4.88 diffs in
when I add a second transfer Ill have 163.66
(probably just dreaming now)
Paul.

308LUX go to the Marks 4WD website for info on hilux gears including stock ratios.

stock?
and your tyres dont affect your crawl ratio figure

Kia Sportage, out of the box:
3.717 (1st) x 1.98 (Tcase low) x 4.778 (diff) = 35.164

Ok my Sierra is
3.6 x 6 x 4.1 = 88.6:1
to factor in tyre size if you divide by the size of your tyres in my case 34" I get a figure of 2.6. This figure then gives us a figure to compare different vehicles with different tyres sizes
So Hypolux with 120:1 and 37s has a figure of 3.2
amd Nick with 220:1 and 38s (thats right tyre size isn't it) = 5.8
Whereas Dumbdunce with 48:1 and say a 35" tyre = 1.4
I'd reckon that between about 2.3 - 3 would be a good usable figure anything above would be a dedicated rockcrawler

What are the ratios in a 88 RR classic 3.5efi 4 Speed Auto Borgwarner viscous coupling Tcase?
I thought I found the info but then I found a different set of specs so I AM confused. I think its pretty damn bad Crawl ratio tho

Yeah, but you can pretty much double it once you factor in the torque converter going up hills (good), and halve it going down (not so good, in fact absolutely crappy). Now you know why you have those orange glowing things behind the front of your wheels after a long descent.............

I got 4.56x3.74x4.88 = ~83:1 divide by 37" for grimbo's figure = 2.25

I guess we could take grimbo's equation and multiply it by your peak engine torque, then divide by the weight of the vehicle to try to "standardize" things across engine capacities/gearing/vehicle weights.
It would give actual torque put to the road per kg weight.

my little car's crawl:
3.478 x 6.129 x 5.12 = 109.1
divided by 34 = 3.21
Looks pretty good for a sierra - but i suspect that Droopy Pete is going to destroy that once he get's the auto in place

I think i may need some 5.12s then
I suppose we need to figure out a base figure to compare from.
what are some standard specs for say a hilux, 80 series, Patrol and suzuki so we can compare from there

86 Sierra Specs are the best i could find (from Off-Road.com):
3.652 x 2.268 x 3.73 = 30.89 / 26" = 1.188
I'm not sure what the widetrack / coiler specs are though.
If I can find a Japanese 660 Jinmy it would have a 4.1:1 1st gear - that would make me even slower

My specs are 2.4795 x 4.316 x 3.54 = 38 then x 2 for the torque converter so about 76.
Thats with ZF auto, maxidrive reduction low range and standard diffs.
Divide this by 35 and i get 2.66 which is not too bad.

2.25 x 323nm =
726.75 / 1950kg =
0.37

3.93X2.28x5.29 = 47 / 32 = 1.4 :-( but with the 5.29s and 32 its damn slow in low 1

Standard Kia Sportage 35.164/26 = 1.352 (grimbo's formula)
1.352*175/1600 = 0.148 My "standardisation"
