I fond this website yesterday and think this is the perfect engine for Defender. I thought 300tdi was VM based, not Inter...any comments ??

This company brought the rights off land rover for the 300tdi and kept producing it. They then perfected the design and now sell them as replacement engines and possibly original fitment to santanas (not 100% sure).
To actually get one sent to Australia is quite expensive from what I have read so may not really be an economical option (thats provided you are based in oz). If your looking for a conversion the izuzu 4bd1t and the td5 seem to be popular conversions although those that have actually done these will be able to help you out more.

as Stuey said, the 2/300tdi's are both Landy engines tracing their linage all the way back to the original Land Rover diesel in the late fifties. After selling the engine to International, they are still produced and fitted to Defenders sold in the South American and African markets, and, IIRC, fit the uprated 2.8 to Sth American Fords. The VM engine was only used for a short time in the late eighties.
There's a bloke in Melbourne importing the 2.8, as well as the turbo and exhaust manifold to fit to the 300Tdi. I can dig up his ph # if you want, or you can page him (Jase) on the AULRO board, as he's fairly regular on there.

Hi Rick,
Interested in the manifold and variable vane turbochargers, can you let me know some contact details if handy?
Have used the upgraded MTQ units in the past and found them great, but Variable vane units are the go to help the little 2/300 tdi's for bottom end.
My 4BD1 uses a TB25 watercooled Garrett, with a .48 exhaust housing and good manifolding, (the turbo exhaust inlet is about 4" from the head,) it has excellent bottom end and almost no lag.

Hi,
Few of the lads have been fitting this engine in Defenders (Got to fit one next month)
And the figures........Wow
Talking around 400 Nm of torque !!!!!
It's a very serious bit of kit.
But comes at a price, Around £3500 uk plus VAT
Don't think the Sanatna uses it, think there still using Iveco lumps, but not sure......
Andy Chaplin used one on the RFC last year in his defneder, And he loves it.
Hope that helps a bit
Jim

Justin I've just PM'd him for some contact details. I thought I had his number, but couldn't find it.
BTW, I've found a 3" exhaust helps reduce spool up on a 300Tdi. I used 2.5" off the turbo (OE is 60mm), and relieved the casting to suit, then about 40mm below the flange, flared it up to 3" at @ 15* and ran that the rest of the way. The stock pipe had a huge mig bead in the throat area at the flange, reducing it t 2"x 2.125" ID.
Tweaked the pump and much, much better. I believe the Mitsubishi unit that DTS uses is very efficient.

Rick,
Yes, very efficient, and smoothes out the 300Tdi to a different engine, not so harsh when pushed. The latest DTS system I put on was a Disco ES7 auto, 245/16 tyres, Defender transfer case, etc, but was only running a 2.5" exhaust. The mits unit is very good at spool up, and runs up to 650 deg at full noise towing a Ultimate camper up hills.
Do you think going to 3" would help a lot in this case? I have noticed since the upgrade that the exhaust gas speed out the tail pipe is heaps more, and fairly roars even though there is no resonator. Might try the 3" next me thinks. I like the idea of cleaning up the standard Tdi unit aswell, might try some mods with those too.
Cheers

don't know. I think 3" is overkill, but it is a lot easier to come by than 70mm, and I bought enough tube, etc to do a sytstem for our Patrol, (using the DTS dump pipe) although I don't know how enthusiastic I am after scratch building the Defender one.
The most noticable difference, and one that surprised me, although it shouldn't have, was the massive increase in the rev range. Maybe it's a function of the 130 system having too much length/pressure drop, but previously third gear would struggle to get to 85km/h (255/85's). I would only take it there if I really, really had to. It would just sound terribly strained and stop reving. New exhaust, stock fueling and it would pull to 100km/h.

Thanks Rick, And I would love to have a customer with another Tdi auto Disco I just might be able to convince they need a new turbo.... A back to back or even - shock, horror,- a DYNO test between the two would be very interesting. I must say I would've preferred to try the TGV manifold and turbo setup on this latest one if I'd heard about them sooner as this would be a good candidate for a variable nozzle unit I believe.
I'll give him a call and av a chat.
Thanks

2.8, what can I say........ AWESOME. I've had one in the truck for 18 months and I love the engine. Even in standard tune it goes well (will light up all 4 Simex without any real trouble) and has huge amounts of low end torque. IMHO a much nicer engine than the TD5 and Tdi. I'd love to see you put one in your new truck, Jim....
One word of warning; this engine eats R380s; I killed a good one in under 12 months. I've now got an HP24 spec ZF4 in its place. I'm only running the small TC which is deffinatly the weak link of the system. I'll have to see how it goes after tuning as I may need to use something larger. FYI M&D in the UK do a conversion kit for a 300tdi/2.8TGV to V8 autobox although its not cheap. If anyone wants to run a 2.8 in a heavy vehicle, that's deffinatly the way to go.
These engines also take a lot of tuning too. I'm facelifting the truck over the summer and, at the same time, I'll fiddle with the engine a little. Its going to get a 3" straight through exhaust, a 'slightly differant' snorkel, pump tweek, slightly higher boost and propane injection. That should see it pushing over 200 bhp and rather a lot of torque

Want cheap power from your 300 tdi? wack on a supercharger from a toyota 2 litre 6 cylinder ($250 from jap wrecker) inline with the turbo. spools it up on low revs like all heck. i was running a 90mm front pully with no clutch and a front bearing off an ac compressor (serpentine belt one)
i didnt have it dynoed and i didn't touch the fuel settings, but it was a few secconds quicker on 0-100 with 38.5 swampers than the standard setup with 750 16s. and you could take off in seccond easily without stalling.
the down side is that the blower sat where the ac pump was, and you had to cut a hole in the bonnet.
