My TD4.2 starts at the touch of the key everytime and when I shut it down it shakes the car - pretty rough too! Is this rough shutdown shake around typical?
Cheers fnq

Thanks Hoonz, this car also has the diesel grrr really bad at low revs in gear, worst I ever heard and from what I have read the mounts can have at least a bit to do with that also. Will check them out.

So what causes run on in these engines? It could be a bit of that.
I am itching to learn how to do a basic backyard tune to a diesel, this car will be going bush fairly often in remote areas I would feel better if I knew a bit more. Taught myself to tune a petrol engine. Even basic hands on information is hard to come by on diesel pumps, anyone got any experience in these basics?
My mounts seem to be intact still but they could work harden and transmit vibration I guess
.

If the motor seems to run on for a very short period and shut down a bit roughly, it can be the fuel cut solenoid not seating correctly or straight away. It's basically what causes these old motors to stop running, otherwise you have to choke it or somehow stop the fuel supply.
The solenoid is located at the back end of the pump, i think it's the only wire attached to them.
Worth a check anyway.
Mine does this every now and then, even though the pump was rebuilt 18 months ago. Don't really see it as a major concern.

My GU (4.2 turbo diesel) runs a little rough in the morning & when I shut it down if it's cold it wants to run on too
. I notice also it blows a considerable amount of diesel smoke aswell???? I was thinking injector pump (I put new injectors in recently) but I'm not too sure

The shut down shudder is normal. Over-run is not and is usually poor injector quality.
The low down grumble is also normal caused by the clutch springs and the thrust bearing system.
Most 4.2 Patrols do this and it is usually not a problem.
Mates one has 300grand on the clock and is still growling but going great. Mine with only 140grand on the clock growls but is going great.
Must be a Nissan thing......

The down side of the shake is it is destroying your body, door latches, seat mounts etc

Thanks for the replies, after reading them, all does seem to be within a normal range, I am happy for the grumble to be clutch springs. Will see to that when the time comes to pull the gearbox.

AS soon as you put a new clutch in the grumble will go away. But in 6months time it will be back. I dont think the run on is a problem. Most old nissan diesel do that. Cant see it hurting the engine
