Help please!! Starting problems

Post by bmsa »

G'day Guys

I have a 96 disco and over the last 12 months it seems to randomly decide not to start. It seems to happen after short trips say to get milk and when you kick her over all the usual dash lights come on but nothing else happens. It seemed if you used the key in the door to lock it then un lock it again it would start first time, maybe I was imagining things as that trick stopped working, but locking it and walking away for 5 -30 minutes she will start first time. The pro's figured it was the usual LR immobilizer problem as nothing else could be found wrong. Much to my frustration today she wouldn't start again even though it now has an immobilizer bypass done.

It’s really @$@#% me off now as you can imagine it’s always when you really need to go somewhere it decides to take a break.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers

Ben

STARTING PROBLEMS

Post by Hally »

g'day`bmsa I too had that same problem on my 1996 defender and my dads 1998 disco . check the body earth just under the passenger side on the innerside of the chassis rail there is a earth clamp there which could have mud and shit all over it .Sometimes it even cracks because of the heat and vibrations next time your car plays up get underneath and give it a wiggle It should start If that is the problem then cut that clamp out and use some propper lugs hope this soughts out your problem

Thanks Hally

I had a look around and I'm not certain I quiet followed what you mean.

On the passenger side I have a wire strap going from the bottom of the block and attaches to the body behind the head light on the passenger side (infront of the second battery) the neg from the second battery is attached to a bolt on top of the power steering. The neg from the main battery attaches to the body just behind the battery then continues to the chassis rail on the drivers side its a little greased up, I will get under and have a closer look on the weekend.
Cheers
