Diesel engine help - wont start

Hey guys. I am a complete newby when it comes to diesel engines - hoping someone can lend some advice here-
Our BJ70 diesel cut out at 90kph on the way home from a 4x4 trip yesterday. My mate who was driving thought it was fuel - but the gauge showed it wasnt empty. Had a few shots at restarting it - and it would fire up sometimes but then conk out after a coupla seconds. Kept at this until the battery started going flat and starter wouldnt turn over. Hooked up the jumper leads from the other car to charge up - but after leaving plenty of time to charge it still wouldnt turn over at all (only the occasional burst after holding the ingnition in start for quite a while). Is there an obvious that could be wrong with the engine??? I don't know jack about diesels.

Diesels only need fuel and air to run. So unless your intake has somehow become blocked, then it is a fuel problem.
Try bleeding the fuel system (pump) to see if there is any air in it. Someone else will have to tell you where the bleed pump is on that engine.

And, What exactly happened when it cut out. IE: Just lost power and stopped or Surged then died or went chugga, chugga like the little 70 that couldn't.
It might help to know some more info

Does this mean it was showing near empty? ie less than 1/4 ? Sounds to me like contaiminated fuel, fuel pump, or fuel filter (as previously mentioned).
If it just suddenly died without any warning, my guess would be the fuel pump, as the others would have given warning signs of fuel starvation.

Some diesels also need 12V to run. I had the engine fuse blow on my 20 year old Rocky, and it stopped dead. Fuel solenoid, or similar, needs power to operate. If that fuse has blown, no fuel, so not run.

You are right, some fuel-cut-off solenoids are set up so that they need to be supplied with power to open. Others need power to open or close, so if the power is cut when it is open then it will stay open.
That is another option - but unlikely since it started or tried to start.

is it an early BJ70 with the inline fuel pump or a later model with roatry pump? if the later model, it needs 12v on the fuel shutoff solenoid to run - if you have an electrical problem it could cause it to shut off like that.
if it is the earlier model it could be an electrical problem with the EDIC motor/control system. disconnect the pushrod between the fuel pump and the EDIC motor and see if it will go then - from memory all the way back will shut off the fuel, in the middle is normal running, and forward is overinjection for starting.
in either case, it could also be a fuel problem, which is most often a blocked fuel filter.
most diesel running problems are electrical, even though they only need air and fuel to run.
cheers

Hello
Just recently had very simular problem with my old truck.Doing about 80k`s and zip nothing Just cut out.Try and start woukd run for a second and stop.Claged fuel filter.Only owned the truck a few months now.Previous owner had not changed filter for a long time.As noted and as I was told, change filter every 10,000k`s.Man what a differnce a clean filter makes.Poor old truck had been starving for fuel for some time.Goes heaps better now.
Cheers

If none of the previous excellent suggestions haven't resolved it then maybe it has a low oil or low oil pressure cutoff? Some of the 2H's had them .. maybe the 3B, or whatever motor this is, has one as well?
The starting and then cutting out could be a low oil pressure type situation. Maybe check the oil level or pressure?
It's probably something simple but just a thought in case it helps.
Cheers

My friends 60 (2H) cuts out going up steep rockclimbs

....doing 70kph in the Cruiser and the 2H rattled and cut out. Pulled the motor down and found it completely choked with sludge and gunge. The oil had set like jelly in the sump, blocked the pump and the low pressure oil cut out switch had activated and stopped the engine. Maybe something like this in your case?

holy crap, how long since you changed the oil?

I have a Datsun 3 litre diesel which I couldn't get to start. When I was pulling it out to replace the motor I found the fuel cutoff wire/lever.

Had a mate with the same problem,he put a one way valve in between the tank and the primer, and never had trouble again.
