I need some help and inspiration on sorting out the air filter on the Pootrol.... a photo would he very helpful! I'm kinda limited on where i can put the Commondoor filter box. Any Ideas? I'm running a snorkel, so a pod filter is out of the question.

I would not discount a pod filter.
I have a pricy one of these:
http://www.bmcairfilters.com
If I did it again I reckon it would not be too hard to make something up, like use a K&N or similar pod filter and make a tube type box from it, from some metal pipe or rolled sheet, tack welded and sikaflexed. Put on ends with the pipe size you need, straight from the snorkel to intake.

thats the sorta gig they run on the Chev diesels. very large capacity.

if u make a box for a pod filter, try poly pipe, like for stormwater. comes in just about everything you need, and can be fixed with silicone or PVC cement, its easy to work with too and comes in good sizes.

Poly pipe and some flexible tubing sounds like the go!!

Would you not want a larger volume box than a bit of pipe?

i guess it would depend on how big the pod filter is...... and how much room is required around it for maximum flow

i am using a k and n filter 12" long with a 4" inlet. 8" tube s/steel fixed one end with side entry and removable at the other end 8 wing nuts brings the inlet tube and filter out in one unit.

i had pod filter in a steel tube with caps on each end 3inch inlet on the side and 3 inch out in the cap which went striaght though the cap and the pod clamped onto then this was silconed and clamped with nut and bolts. and brackets made out of flat bar to bolt into the orginal airbox mounts. the only thing you have to do is put a shield around the air filter were the air comes in as this part gets real dirty just something to disfuse the air as it comes though. chris

I have just made a new air filter system for my Nissan for a v8, I made the air box to use the Holden air filter, and it also has a snorkel fitted as well.

It might give some ideas.

i got a pod filter today.......
it will do until i can enclose it and hook it up to the snorkel. I have limited room where the snorkel comes through the inner guard...... i am going to manufacture a tube arrangement, probably out of PVC storm pipe (the heavy duty stuff) and mount it at 45 degrees to the way it's sitting now, and use a 30 degree fitting to connect it to the snorkel. Should work... hard to explain exactly what i mean until it's built. I figure that i should be able to mount that filter inside a 6" piece of pipe and it should still draw enough air through it..... i will have to look into that part of it further.

How will the PVC stand up to the heat Tony?
Dont really KNow myself but after working in maint. at the abbitoirs a few years and seeing what 90deg. water does to it over time......
Is a cheap option for them though.

at abattoirs they use chemicals that would make Saddam Hussein proud..... eats through anything. Should hold up to the heat for a while..... if i have to make a steel one later, then thats ok. As long as this one gets it engineered, and to Rover Park and back, I'll be happy

Wondered why I got six toes and 2 heads
nah, just chlorine foam for washdowns. It was the heat from the water that warped the drainpipes and caused joints to come apart.
yeah, the pvc will hold up for a while.
I'd hate to think of the stuff warping and letting water in the engine though cos I'm sure you will take it swimming

yeah gonna take it out and paint it black. Might even paint it the same blue as the engine covers

if i had to go through water that deep, I'd turn around and go back...... not too keen on deep water crossings

How tight are all the joins? What did you seal the removable sections with?

how about wrapping some fibrous heat tape around it ?

Or heat blanket or maybe hi-temp metallic paint to reflect the heat.
Looks good.

ISUZUROVER wrote:How tight are all the joins? What did you seal the removable sections with?
the joints are water tight..... the back of it where i cut it to put the pod through is sealed with foam rubber i glued around the edge with silastic. It wouldn't let water in if it copped a fair sort of a splash...... but it wouldn't be water proof in a deep crossing..... but as i said... i steer clear of them anyhow. And being a petrol engine, it would stall before it had a chance of ingesting too much water.

i have woven fibre heat blanket material here..... but it would be a PITA to remove to clean the filter..... going to Rover park on the long weekend... and i usually have to remove and blow out the filter daily..... a heat blanket would be a pain.
