If you have manual locking hubs, make sure the lever is in 2H and the button on the dash is not pushed in (if you have this).
For auto hubs, reverse the car until it goes out.
If these wont work, your selector mechanism in your transfer case may be malfunctioning. In my 4trak the vacuum switch packed it in and wouldnt select 4x4 at all. Yours may be sticky or a line may be blocked.
Let us know how u go

So it wont come into 2wd?? Cause you say it wont go off till you put it in neautral? Once in neutral, will it go into 2wd? If not, try reversing a bit in 4wd. I have this problem sometimes, dont think its anything serious, i just revers a foot or two and then try again. Usually works.

((So, the stick/lever is in the "2H" position?? But the "4x4 light is still on and there is still drive going to the front wheels?)) i've never worked on a 4x4 before and have got no manual to be able to identify the vacuum hoses ive been on it for hours now im tired oily and baffled but im lovin every minute of it do you have any more suggestions pleeeeez
Ok, its getting hard to understand this so called 'english' so i will translate into australian, and tell me if i'm right
If what i've 'translated'
is correct, then it could be something out of alignment in the box/tranny? A while ago mine jammed into Neutral on the transfer shift lever, wouldn't budge. Eventually pulled about 4-5 bolts off the top of the gearbox (thru teh floor) and pulled out the selector, jiggled around a screwdriver in there, put it all back to gether and hey presto she worked
.... maybe try that
... no responsibilty taken if u do more dammage doing that though

It means that the vacuum switch is not disengaging the plunger in the transfer case, which is why 4x4 is still activated.
It could be a blocked vacuum hose / hoses on incorrectly
It could be the vacuum switch itself inside the transfer case
It could be one of the two? solenoids that activate the 4wd mechanism
These are the most common faults.
I had to replace the vacuum switch in my transfer case..
(Parts + Labour = AUD$950
)
They are quite intricate systems, so maybe a pro should look at it

Is it only the newer rocky's that have vacume hoses etc. I thought it was just a matter of move the gearstick, and it manually moves the gear into place for 4H/4L
.... unless your talking about auto locking hubs?

The Rocky's that have the vacuum switch are the ones which have the 4H button on the dashboard, and the lever which selects 2H-N-4L.
Nath, so yours uses the one lever for all 2H-N-4H-4L?
