Hi there.

I am after some help - after the wife destroyed the old 3b engine (cooked) I decided to fit a 2H engine out of a 60 series cruiser.

Before some one askes - the reason for opting for a 2H conversion is I happened to be given a written off 60 series which had been slammed up the rear - very cheap conversion.

This is all done now and running - and like all engine conversions there is times it tries to beat you but persistance pays off.

My problem: I also fitted the 60 series gear box, as the 3b gearbox has a longer input shaft and bell housing. The 60 series gearbox was electric 4x4 selection which some how operates on vacume presure - is some one within the forum able to please explain how this works?

The gear box also has an over-drive fitted (another lever) what were these like - any one know?

I eppreciate any input - many thanks

Wayne

just use the 60 series transfer because the diesel has a vacuum pump behind the alternator so your petrol might not make enought :?: it is a little vac cylinder under the driver seat that moves leaft and right so that the transfer lever only goes front to back

As far as i know the vacuum actuator on the transfer is just a diaphram which is directly connected to the 4x4 shaft. The electric switch moved a switch on the actuator which changed which side of the diaphram had low pressure. Its then just hooked into the vacuum system somewhere, reserve canister maybe?

You could just tear it all off and make it mechanical.

Must have been an early 60 to have an aftermarket overdrive fitted with an extra lever. They should last the life of the box as long as you dont do any towing with it and you show a bit of respect when changing gears.

Yep you should be able to get the little vacuum solenoids (2 of) pretty easily and fit them up My FJ73 was vacuum operated
Basicaly H4 electric swith on the dash switchs the solenoid which blocks vacuum going to the actuator in fact I think you will find that with no vacuum applied the transfer will be in 4wd constantly so don't lock your hubs
The second solenoid is operated when the L4 lever is engaged it touches a switch like a (reverse light switch) in the transfer which operates the second solenoid which blocks vacuum and the actuator locks the front and rear shafts
clear as mud?
and the over drive possibly "Fairey" don't tow with it apparently they don't have a very large contact area on the spline and can flog it out easily
