I've got the transfer out on bench with rear section case off and reading workshop manual they say to remove rear bearing and the synchro ring thing with all the teeth. does that need doing to fit gears or does everything get done in front half of box. Marks instructions say to disassemble box and that is it. BTW, GU auto and 43% reductions.

If your useing a gregories manual just run with its instructions to dis assemble the front half off the case as it says .Then use the marks instructions to build it back up they are very good with lots of pics

You dont need to disassemble much in the back section of the transfercase. You can leave the all the drive dogs and chain and sprockets for front axle drive in place, as long as you thoroughly mask off to stop aluminium filings from the grinding from accumulating. You will aslo need to throughly flush the grinding dust out with a solvent. ie petrol or kero.
