MTR's do suck in the mud !!

I did buy the 37's for rock missions but there was a mud event on today to support a rural fire brigade so I went for a bash.

The MTRs fill with mud real easy and don't clear at all, the only advantage was heaps of ground clearance.

My mate who's still running the Simex ET's drove rings around me on the steep climbs.

Bit of a downer - to have any chance of climbing the banks I had to get a run-up which resulted in a busted front axle and now the gearbox is also making crunchy noises :(

The important thing to remember is MUD SUCKS.
No more "mud-bunny, no brainer" sessions for me :cool:

Thats a real bummer, but then again I dont think anyone would compare MTRs to Centipedes for mud work.

clue: the 'MT' in 'MT/R' does not stand for Mud Terrain.

There are a few factors here how easy can you spin your 37's up to clean em.

ET's are made for chewin MUD like a Bogger is. MT/R's work well in mud but aren't a bogger or a ET. The side biters give extra control over a Standard MT other than that they go like a standard MT but I have found they have exellent properties on snow aired down (side biters again and soft compound).

I haven't watched a MT/R closely in mud because I am on em but people looking from the outside always mention that they cleaned quite well too but it is all dependant on the goop I reckon any tyre will become a slick if it is thick and deep enough.

i tried mine in the mud once and they didnt clean real well altho i didnt have the power 2 spin quick enuf having a 2.8L diesel but hopefully the duals and turbs will help out :twisted:

I had owned 35 ET's for 3 years before changing to the MTR's. I knew there was no way the MTR would compete with the Simex in mud, My comments were only to point out what I expected and experenced with the MTR.

There seems to be alot of forum whores who pass comment / judgement on tyres ( or other products ) without ever having actually used them. :!: :!: To most here I was pointing out the bl00dy obvious but at least it came from experence :cool:

ive been steering clear of mud do to the fact it trashers every seal and if your lucky a couple of bearings as i found out the hard way after a mud run..... front and rear pinion seals rooted and tcase seals rooted and to top it all of rear pinion bearing then decides to start whinging its tits off :roll: :roll: :roll:

Relax guys...it was'nt a personal attack :cool: i lurk around here quite a bit and i saw a chance to get a bite...looks like got one ;)

look if you build your rig for just one type of terrain, thats cool.... for me i'd want somthing that was a bit more of an all rounder sand, mud, rock what ever i'd get sick just driving around one thing ( sending out another line)

look supra you got a great bus there, shi t loads better than mine

You posted as if you were shocked :shock: that MTR didn't out perform a Simex. You must have a very nice motor that pulls 7000rpm but is the final ratios still fast enough to clean em up?


Look at your heading, No the MTR does not suck in MUD as opposed to a Racing Slick it is awsome which again was the whole point of the post. To illustrate that it is horses for courses.

Oh yeah dude no way was this a personal attack on you or your experience but remember Newb's do come here expecting to get the good oil and MTR's suck in Mud is not really the truth is it they just suck as opposed to JT2 and ET's but at the expense of driving a low flying cessna on the road :D :D

I believe coating the tyres in cooking oil stops the mud from sticking... I'm glad to be of help. Equally interesting is foil wrapped potatoes take about 30 minutes nestled on extractors.

I run the 35" mtr's and 90% of my offroad driving is mud, but then I have the Chev power to spin em :finger:

Only one thing for it - convince the Mrs that you need a set of ET's in addition to your MTR's ;) .

Bit of a bugger re the axle and box though.

44" Super Swamper Bogger - customised to aid in cleaning capabilities. Well that's my opinion but I really have no idea. Although I do know that they'd look cool on my hilux :twisted:

That had more to do with the fact that he was diffing out in the middle. From memory I drove up quite easily without much throttle.

Mine clog up in the clay and stay clogged.

Other mud types or OK, the side lugs dont work too well climbing out of slipperry ruts I find.

I reckon it depends what ya doin...
The guys from the A4WDMRA use "rice paddy tyres" a very agressive tractor type tyre that works great through the mud, they turn corners well and do a sensational job of getting the horsies (over 700 of 'em in some vehicles) where they belong :cool: .
My bogger TSLs are excellent in a DOT approved tyre but not so flash at turnin corners :lol:

If youre looking for a 35 then you wont beat the Simex ET in the mud. In the mud event during the weekend there was some boggers, swampers and simex. The simex definately worked the best !!

You are right. That rut wasn't friendly to 33s or smaller. I was right behind you as you were going up and you did it easy. The same tyres on a heavier rig would have found the going harder though.
