i was looking at that photo of the shorty posted on the f/s ad... is that a late model bonnet fitted to it since it has the scoop? haven't seen any soft tops with the scoop before.

The small bonnet scoop is for the intercooler on the 2.5 and 2.8 turbo diesels.

Many imports have the intake just inside the grill and the air goes through the bonnet. any ideas on when they changed from this style to the scoop? youngest soft top diesel i've seen so far is 96 and it's a no-scooper.

On reflection you're probably right, I have seen the internal scoop built into the bonnet on 2.5l jobbies.

haha i know that link! i actually scouted it out after Frank posted it. hate to say i wasted some very valuable study time and about 3/4 of a day cruising the pages. incredible stuff and so tempting/inspiring i'm not game to go back (at least until i can afford to)

Yeah, it's a good site, I joined up to get extra access. Though correspondence with the guy's over there can get confusing at times. When I first imported the Paj I mistakenly thought 4x4's don't go off road in Japan. That site made me see reality. Thor, have you got a J top? Or just interested?

i'm in the same boat as you with the offroading in japan. thought with a lot of people in small country = lots of roads, not a great deal of dirt. how naive and sheltered! some of the jsroot videos of them burning around dirt tracks are great.
no j-top for me, having strong considerations though. was interested in diesels for a while but started doubting after hearing they lack power. yet to try one though, which shows my level of commitment to get one haha

If I bought again I would go 2.8 diesel or 3.5 twin cam (putting up with maintainence issues). I drove a 2.5 oiler j top and was impressed with low dow grunt, also a worked over 2.5 (extra boost, large exhaust etc) which was heaps of fun. But hearing the 2.5's were fragile put me off. I couldn't afford a 3.5 J top twin cam, but took one for a drive (in the passenger seat)- heaps more grunt than my 3.0 litre. With the auto and light body it really boogied. On par with my mate's 350 Chev SWB Cruiser.

you make a few interesting points there, thanks for your input. for me i guess thats the good thing about not rushing into getting a 4x4, can afford to keep moving the goal posts.
