Hilux Uni Joint Strength

Who has broken a hilux tailshaft uni joint?

Does it happen?

How much torque is needed?

Was it due to lack of maintenence?

never broken one or heard of anyone braking one. Ask Tony He can break anything :D he will let you know.No i belive there pretty strong
are you deciding what joint to put into the Buggy

You got it Dave ;)

At the moment the atlas has 1350 yokes but from what I've found, 1350 working angle is pretty poor. I might step up to the Toyota's :roll: to get more angle.

Well putting any Toyota put onto a flashy Atlas will have to improve it ;)
Do you need the extra movement or angles in the sharfts :?: Is it running a dicky angle from The ATLAS to the Diffs like the front sharft in the moonbuggies which is likly to bind on extension.

The greater the angle I can get, the more forward I can move the motor. All to try and improve it's climbing ability/weight distribution.

Far enough, but its the front sharft your dealing with, as its going to have an easyer life than the rear.More of the time the rear sharft would take the extreme loads ie; Full throtal climb, bouncing and coming down on the rear tyres ect. Its not very offen you will be nose down and into it say in reverse shock loading that uni the same as in rear.
On a different not whats the size difference between the two

1350s are 1ton rated, hilux a 1/2 - 1/4ton rated from what I'm told. And who says I don't plan on full throttle, front drive only reversing whilst bound up??

You are correct - it is for the front which won't be as critical. However if the rear tailshaft fails, it takes out the exhaust and possibly the oil filter. If the front goes, it's my legs that will potentially cop it! At least with it so close I can keep a close eye on it :roll:

Im sure that Tony junk is run Lux Uni's in the front And Rover in the rear which a 1310

Yeah I think that's the case. At least the moon buggies are still running a mixture of toyota stuff. I guess I need to order a drive flange for the atlas :roll: - that'll be about $1000 :cry:

Have had a look at the offset unis u can buy from the US??, dont know what size they come in but they are around.

Made by Tom Woods. http://www.4xshaft.com/index.html We run these in the front of the Moon Buggies and i run one in the back of my Buggy.

My buggy runs 2 hilux uni's in the front and a 1310 uni and how i havent had any problems there surprises me. I run one spicer 1310 uni and one 1310 Tom woods offset uni in the rear and still have had a couple of the spicer 1310 ones fail.

I wouldnt use Hilux Uni joints your going to have problems. You just need to clearence the 1350 ears and run Offset Uni Joints. But if your trying to do this on the cheap then its only going to cost you in other places.

Went down to Univeral Driveline Services on Friday arvo. Looks like they might be able to get offset unis from a local supplier (awaiting confirmation). If this is the case then I'll go this option to support our local businesses but otherwise I'll just get a few over from Tom Woods.

wouldnt mind knowin if there was a local supplier, but i run standard hilux unis with a 4.3 v6 chev (200+ HP at the rear wheels) and havent had much problem..just a little binding with the front shaft on droop

Another local mob you could talk to in Brisbane is Petron Automotive... Ron, Brendan, or Michael there will be able to help you out.

Ron has raced offroad buggies before and has built some pretty tough gear for some pretty spastic cars.

They're just off the Pacific Motorway service road, down the same street as Springwood Marine.

The supplier never got back to the driveshaft shop. 4 calls were made but the supplier never found anything other than a part number in a book.

200HP is nowhere near the power/torque that goes through a rockcrawler though. I'll have a good 200HP and prob 350Nm at the flywheel then multiply that by the 15:1 reduction between the auto and transfer and the torque figures are huge. Talking to a guy at work that drag races a 1000hp ford on 31 spline axles. There's rockcrawlers around that would snap them like a toothpick.

Thanks for the tip.

I currently use Universal Driveshaft Supplies at Geebung and have been very happy with their work in the past.

Though I have always heard good reports about Petron.
