Swivel hub bearing shims???

Replaced king pin bearings in 84 lux swivel hubs but preload is out of whack. Anyone got a trick for setting the preload of the swivel hub bearings with the right number of shims. Cant decide between 1 or 2 shims top and bottom. How critical is it and should I get a specialist guage for the job?

it will tell u in a workshop manual wot the right preload is.
but i just shim them up so they turn by hand with a slight amount of force applied.. and then just divide the amount of shims evenly betwee the top and bottom

You can buy a fish scale (weight) to measure the preload - they aren't expensive. Don't know the prices on the tools for measuring the position of the knuckle , but with a bit of thought and a lathe you could make up your own (in the pics they look pretty simple). The inner axle seal may leak if the shims are too far out of alignment, because the inner axle seal surface (on the inner axle) will be too low or too high to seal effectively. The position of the axle is held by the bronze bush on the inside of the spindle.

yes but if u devide the shims evenly between the topb and bottom (e.g 2 on top and 2 on bottom) it will b right

Thanks guys. I got a thread from Pirate that suggested using a fish spring scale and set them to about 7-12lbs. The preload in the manual is 30-60 Newtons but I not sure how to measure that because it would vary dpending on how quickly you move it. Also not sure if you are supposed to set the preload without the stub axle, hub etc on the axle. Anyway I have set it as best I could and Ill just have to see how it drives.
