iv had a longe range tank fitted to my 80 but the fuel gauge for the new sub tank isnt reading correctly. everyone i know with this setup has the same problem.
would it read correctly if i was to replace it with an autometer fuel gauge and sender unit to match or what else could be done ?

Yes you need to make sure the sender and the gauge are matched to each other.
I thought I could just use a fuel gauge I bought together with a long range tank from a Patrol that had the sender in it already. Wrong!! It read empty when it was full...and half full when empty. I bought a new gauge for $50 to match the resistance of the sender...all ok then.
It's all to do with the resistance of the sender.

With a few measurements, followed by a few resistors, it should usually be possible to calibrate gauges to suit senders. In most cases, anyway.
Sometimes the float arm needs a bit of bending as well so that it's actually lying at the right angle at the sensor for any given fuel level.
