Hey all,
my 2000 gu ute with 100,000km has in the past 2 weeks developed a miss when cold. i usually let the car idle for a min in the morning then baby it till it warms up. it has this miss until it is warm. when it misses it lets out a puff of smoke. this has gotten progressively worse over the last 2 weeks. i'm thinking injectors or something? anybody had a similar problem or got any ideas?

85lux,
is it missing from start up? Is the smoke white? (unburnt diesel) if so it could possible be a faulty glow plug.

P.S. oil, air and fuel filters were replaced 4000km ago.

85lux,
I have a custom buzz bar for my glow plugs and when it was first fitted one of the glow plugs wasnt making contact, as a result it would blow white smoke till it warmed up on start up. Once we found out what was the problem and fixed the connection the missing and smoke went away.
may pay to check all the glow plug caps to ensure they are all tight, if so there may be a faulty glow plug.

100,000 is an arbitrary figure - the only way to tell 100% is to put them on a spray bench and have them tested.
I agree that the white smoke is most probably caused by a faulty glow plug (as in totally unburnt fuel - no ignition), however it could also be a cylinder down on compression, or a combination of the two.
You can check your plugs by removing the common buss bar on all plugs and applying current to each one - no spark - no plug. You can also check the resistance by applying an ohmmeter between the tip of each plug and ground (engine block).
Glow plug failure is not unheard of, most of the diesel cars I have owned have had one or more fail at some point in time.

may also be a fuel leak -sucking air. around fuel filter is quite common especially if you have a water separator type.

always start with cheapest and work your way up mine had the same problem and it ended up being water in the fuel I ended up puting a aftermarket glass fuel filter on to keep an eye on the fuel.

Hi 85lux, mine has been doing the same thing for the past 60,000 ks, but only in winter when its cold. Its like a miss in the engine.
I let the car warm up before driving off.
I had the injectors changed at 100,000 ks and its still doing it, so I'm putting it down to a glow plug fault. Haven't had the time or $$$ to get it fixed yet.
Might get it checked next couple of weeks. Let me know if you get it resolved before then.
