Hi
I hope you can help.
I have a mate who has a 40 series SWB cruiser for sale. It has the original 4cy diesel engine. The body is in pretty good nic and has 33" rubber on a nice set of wheels.
He wants $5500 for it. Is this over priced? I know the vehicle and it's history but have seen much cheaper models for sales er $4500.
Thanks

without actually seeing it, i think around $4000-4500 provinding it is in good mechanical condition.

It is only worth whay someone is willing to pay
A friend of mine sold his FJ40 for $5000, with rebuilt 327, 2" lift new clutch, and respray (but not much rego)
Another friend sold his FJ40 for $1500, it had worked 308, sprung over, 35s, recaro seats, respray, but no rego. (he didnt tell me he was selling it the bugga as i would of bought it at that price)
If its what your after and you REALLY know what life it had buy it. But beware buying cars of mates can end badly.

depends on the year and body condition - read rust. i paid $4k for a 78 petrol/gas very neat with almost no rust, but got nailed on diff repairs. recently bought a 1983 LX petrol ( 5sp p/s discs ) for $3500 with some bad body rust.
for that price it would need to be reasonable mechanical and body

I think it is a 1980 model. Body is in good nic but he has cut some rust out of doors and rear guards.
For what it is it seems a bit pricey after the feedback i am receiving. I think why he wants so much is because he paid 6000 for it in a car yard 18 months ago

i paid $5k for my '84 bj42.. i think i talked him down from $5,500 ..
it came with recaros, 2 sets of rims/tyres (31's but both crap), few bits of rust cut out, hard top & soft top, and machined disks on the front, rebuilt front end (seals, bearings, etc).. power steer, air con, and some busted ass spotties.. spares bits and peices..
for the stuff that was done to it before i bought it i considered it a steal.. but I have probably put another 10-15k into it again already but thats part of the fun of owning a 40.
I still consider it to be a great bargin.. I test drove a few others that were cheaper but they had nothing on this one.. Check it out as much as you can and you will know if it feels right for you.. considering its a diesel I would think that a good mechanical history would be a very important factor in your purchasing descision.. is the donk a B or a 3B?
hope this has helped!!
