Hi,
im just after your thoughts on early to mid 90s Pajeros VS Jackeroos. Mainly diesels.
they both seem like good, reliable vehicles. there seems to be more Pajeros around which is good for spare parts, Jackeroos seem to have a very good rep for being reliable.
What i want to know is thinkgs like:
Is the Paj 2.8Tdiesel a better motor than the Isuzu Diesel (economy/power).
Which IFS is better?
Which has better LSD?
Fuel tank size?
and anything else that you might be able to think of.
thanks,
Shem

Yes, that era Jackaroo does have a good reputation for reliability. I think the Isuzu heritage helps a lot.
Somewhere along the line the Jackaroo Diesel had a "different" high pressure injection system (from Caterpillar, I believe.) I recall that tuning it requires specialist knowledge, and your average diesel experienced 4by mechanic wouldn't know where to start.
IFS? Paj rules!
I recall a comment that the Paj has longer control arms, so gets more wheel travel for same CV angles. ARB have a front diff lock for the Jackaroo.
Don't know much about the Jackaroo's LSD, other than it requires a special additive (along with LSD oil) to reduce noise. Same as Commodore LSDs.
NFI on fuel tank size for Jackaroo - Paj has 92 litre (LWB) or 75 litre (SWB.)
Good luck,
Scott

jackero's have a very low slung transfer case wich can get caught up on things but the izuzu 3l tdi is a very powerfull motor for it's age punching out something like 120kw and 320nm compared to the pajero 2.8tdi 92kw and 290nm.

im actually thinking along the lines of a late Gen1 Paj now. save a few dollars and that way can spend a bit on accessories.

Can't talk about the newer jackaroo and pajero, but I recently had a first gen 2.3 jackaroo, and I now have a 2.6 pajero first gen.
All I can really say is that I got my moneys worth out of the jackaroo
It got hammered quite hard, and the only thing that ever broke was a heater hose. (3 hours later, road side repair, pain in the ass to get to!). Other than that, I loved it. Wheel travel wasn't great, but I can't really compare it to the pajero because I haven't done alot of wheeling in it yet. Dare I say it, the 2.3 felt *almost* as powerful as the 2.6 pajero engine, althrough not quite as smooth. I did find it hard to find aftermarket parts for the jack, there seems to be alot more around for the pajero. What else can I add, oh yeah standard wheels are very small!
Power steering in the jackaroo worked well, but my paj doesn't have any so I guess it doesn't count.
I actually learned to drive manual in an early 90's 2.6 efi jackaroo, from memory thart went quite well and was *ok* on fuel. The 2.3 was a bit of a guzzler though, I think it had an 89L tank which was handy. Shitloads of room in the back when you fold the rear seat forward. If you're short you could sleep in there quite comfortably. Quite happily fit two fully assembled mountain bikes and camping gear in the back. The holes in the floor where I removed the kids seat did tend to make it wet though...

hmm duno much about the early jackeroo's other than to stay away from them, but the early mk1 paj is a good thing, avoid the 2.6l petroll were posible but the 2.5tdi with 75kw and the v6 apear to be prety good motors. but if u got the turbo diesel get one with low k's like an import

yeah im leaning towards the Paj. especially if i go for a 80s model - the Paj looks far better.
