what is everyone doing for their fuel tank breathers for their buggys?

ive been watching (between work) our tv that has rock crawling dvds playing all day and just happened to notice that when most of them roll you can see the fuel streaming out of the breather systems..


is this a big issue (it should be to a point) or does everyone just let it slide?

what have you done to your buggy to stop this.

in bike racing you use catch tanks... great idea IMWO, doesnt take much for something to go up in flames.

Fluid containment is a big issue in rockcrawling. Any fluid loss (even loss water from tyres) attracts a significant penalty. Fluid catch cans are encouraged (some use the frame as a catch can) as are roll over valves in fuel vent lines. According to Werock rules, ball valves are required on all fuel lines (vent, return and supply) and need to be accessible from underneath the vehicle.

So to actually answer your question, you need a roll over return valve for the vent line. They're like a jiggler syphon fitting with a ball bearing inside that closes off the valve when inverted.

some race cars use a vent line that runs 270 degrees around the roll bar frame to stop fluid loss in a rollover situation.

ie it goes (read carrefully)
1. from the tank neck to a point to the left of and behind, and above the tank
2. from there to a point to the right of and in front of - and above the tank
3. to a point on the right of and below the tank... line is left pointing to the ground.

so the vent line can still vent fuel - but no matter which way you roll over - the fuel cannot pour out the vent line - as there is ALWAYS a part of the fuel line ABOVE the level of fuel in the tank.

i already did.. it looks to be one of those ball valves..

My vent line goes from tank at rear to the "B" pillar along the chassis then up to the top of the "B" then back down to the slider.

Much the same as previously described.

I've never had a problem in the past.....
